Religion in Thousand

There are deities in Thousand, but they are decidedly more absent than a classic DnD setting. As a result most people would not consider themselves overly religious, aside from offering a few token prayers at a shrine when times are tough. There are temples, each with their own acolytes, but these are modest organisations.   The Gods are as follows. Remember that in this setting the EVIL alignment does not necessarily mean 'burns orphanages for fun', it means selfishness at the cost of others - your character can venerate an evil god without being evil themselves.

Bo Gorudo

Order, protection | Lawful Good   A woman whose appearance varies, but she is always depicted with a gold serpent over her shoulder and holding a sword. Thought to be representative of the judge (serpent), jury (mortal) and executioner (sword).   Bo Gorudo is often at odds with An'nai due to their opposing alignments - An'nai seeks knowledge at any cost, whereas Bo demands safety, even if it means ignorance.   UPDATE: The group have since learned that Bo Gorudo is largely a front for Tsunamjin, or possibly idolisation left over from when Tsunamjin directly ruled Thousand many many centuries ago - he has since completely withdrawn from society, however his priests still have ability to call upon divine power...

Furyu

Beauty, Music, Art | Neutral Good   A beautiful female peacock, Furyu is sometimes depicted as vain, but often stresses beauty and art for the sake of making other people happy and inner beauty being the most important. Particularly venerated by birdfolk.   UPDATE: Sshh! Scoundrel!, a kenku who briefly accompanied the group, was privy to the fact that Furyu is actually a cover for Furme, the birdlike god of thieves. This is secret knowledge carefully guarded by birdfolk who know it, and so the group are none the wiser.

Karada

Harvest, bounty, health | Chaotic Good   Often depicted as a large man holding a large fish and a crane. It is thought that the fish is actually the god and the man is merely a servant. Karada represents bounty and healthiness, and thus is also worshipped as a fertility god.   UPDATE: The group have learned that Karada was eaten by the Hunger a thousand years ago. This may go some way to explain why healers are so few and far between, which in turn has caused the priesthood of Karada to reserve healing only for the noble elite. It is an open secret that Karada's priesthood is corrupt and money-driven, with a few hidden exceptions like the Temple of the Light Unending. That Karada healers do exist suggests that some remnant of the fish god still exists...

Faistus

Forge, fire, earth | Lawful Neutral   Often depicted as a bearded human or dwarf man, colossal in stature. Also venerated by hobgoblins and half-orcs, given the role of weapons in battle. Faistus works tirelessly at his forge, and cares not whether he makes tools for peace or war.   UPDATE: It is known that Faistus is one of the few gods who is still alive after the Hunger decimated much of the pantheon. This may explain why his temples are largely thriving.

Cat Sita

Fate & Fortune | True Neutral   A cat that is half black and half white, but sometimes also depicted as two cats. Particularly venerated by tabaxi and halflings. Cat Sita works in mysterious ways, and most who beseech her find their prayers unanswered, so she has very few followers.   UPDATE: Tera's deva Azume revealed that Cat Sita was attacked by the Hunger, who managed to consume half of it (fate). The remaining half was able to reach Tsunamjin, who reluctantly consumed the other half (fortune). Although this should mean Cat Sita is no more, there are still subtle signs of her influence in Thousand...

Wukong

Trickery, deception, mischief | Chaotic Neutral   Often referred to as the monkey king, Wukong is the god of mischief and mayhem, though largely depicted in a positive light. Thought to have gifted illusion magic to the world. Venerated by shapeshifters.   UPDATE: Tsunamjin revealed to Tera that Wukong was sent into the Abyss with the Hunger to guard it from escaping, however it eventually outsmarted him and almost escaped. Wukong's fate is unknown, but given the transformative powers bestowed on the Hunger's followers, it might be inferred that Wukong was also consumed for its power.

Zhun

Death, undeath, sacrifice | Lawful Evil   Depicted as a hooded anonymous figure to represent that death is universal. Zhun makes no discrimination, and comes for everyone eventually.   The soulless undead are not an affront to Zhun - it is simply another stage of being. Once a soul has crossed into Zhun's territory however, it is said to be particularly difficult to bring them back. It is common knowledge that during resurrection spells, diamonds are offered to Zhun in exchange for permitting the soul to return - but diamonds are incredibly difficult to come by, largely due to being strictly controlled by the Zhun priesthood.   UPDATE: Azume mentioned that Zhun was implored to bring an end the Hunger and refused, stating they were a collector not a killer. Their current status is unknown.

Rashindra

War, victory, bloodshed | Neutral Evil   A war goddess commonly depicted as a hobgoblin and especially venerated by them. She has multiple arms and carries different objects of warfare. She is sometimes depicted with a serpent at her feet - whether this is Bo Gorudo or An'nai is hotly debated.   UPDATE: Azume revealed that Rashindra tried to defeat the Hunger but was almost killed in the process, and had to be rescued by Faistus. Her current status is unknown.

An'nai

Magic & knowledge | Chaotic Evil   God of all knowledge and learning, often depicted as a serpent. Since An'nai is all about pushing the boundaries of knowledge at any cost, it is often considered chaotic evil. Open worship of it is not illegal, but is considered tactless.   UPDATE: Very little is still known about An'nai, including their stance on the Hunger.
