Towers of Malunar

"At first the golems the Mages of The New Empire sent were carved in decorative, ornate ways, not terrible but also nothing very impressive. Over time as the waves continued they became a little more shapeless, just boulders in fields. Made no difference to us, we turned them into dust easy enough. Came to the point where we needed only a quarter of the guard stationed. Me and the lads were in the recreation quarters when we heard the horn. We jumped up and grabbed out gear and made our way to the battlements. We were there and ready, but we didn't see any charging enemies. Off in the distance, a glimmer could be seen. After a long moment a tower came into view. Before long it was outside catapult range and it just floated to the ground. It lit up with light and arcane bolts lashed out. Went right through gates."

Subjugation War Veteran
Nestled upon rocky hills just southwest of the Great Divide, Malunar embodies a foreboding appearance. Polished stone stacked high in a compact decagonal shaped city. Emperor Amakir spent a fortune on propping the city up as his main source of training magic users. Amakir acquired many bright minds to train and teach younger generations in specific fields. Having no real enterprises, Malunar's main source of income came from selling their services to those that need them, but even then the deficit was greater. When the Shattering even happened and the empire collapsed, this left the city in financial peril. The Great Divide was owned by the Sect of Moradin dwarves, the fertile fields toward the north were occupied by tribes of halfings and gnomes and the untamed rainforest in the south were filled with dangerous creatures and pirates. For the first years they budgeted to ensure survivability, but knew one day that they would need to do more.   Within this time a cousin of Emperor Amakir arrived in the city, Beiro Koraere, and explained the his mother's father's mother was the sister to the emperor. He survived the volcanic eruption by traveling south for hunting game. He provided documents to prove what he said was true. He wished to the mages of Malunar to press his claim to the empire and restore peace to the continent. The mages were skeptical at first, but proved that the documents were real. They reached an agreement. Malunar will press his claim to reunite the empire and in return Beiro will rule from this city with a council of mages to help guide and set policies.   A new banner was made and decrees were written up and sent to the other kingdoms. There were no returns. The mage city amassed a standing army and marched upon the neighboring territories, this began the Subjugation War on the eastern half of Morgoth. The mages led a mass recruitment, donning armor and raising stone golem. It seemed like a glorious cultural change happened over night. Spirits high, they marched north and northeast to subjugate To their own surprise reading about warfare and actual warfare are completely different. They suffered heavy losses to the steadfast dwarven defenses and made victories in the Fair Fields, but nothing of value.   Feeling aggravated, the mage council stopped holding public updates on their triumphed rise to military might. They sought immediate results, they wanted to show how much power they can manifest on the battlefield. They gathered together and agreed to unleash a number of towers from the decagon structure, they'd use them to smash through defensives and hold air superiority. They manned 4 of the towers and detached from the city and began the slow travel towards war areas.   These towers stood 350ft tall and can house 100 equipped military personal. The towers have 15 levels, and within them are living quarters, a kitchen, defensive positions, an gate at the bottom, and magic reserves to power the structure. The arcane mechanisms required well trained magi in order to perform actions meaning certain rooms were required a specific rank to enter. While floating the tower is unable to use it's most powerful abilities, but can be defended by a series of smaller missiles to pepper the skies from flying enemies. When properly station, a single massive beam can be utilized on targets, disintegrating anything caught in the blast.   These towers smash the resilient dwarven defenses, allowing golems and soldiers to enter the mountain ways. To the north, the towers melted stone forts which the tribesmen sallied from. They brought the campaign into a more serious phase of the war. North towns would become abandoned at the sight of them. Assaults have been attempted, but once discovered the towers would rise and fire multiple missiles upon them.   One tower was destroyed during the war. A dwarven sapper division managed to tunnel underneath a structure and send it underground. This cracked the towers foundation allowing an ambush team to infiltrate the lower levels, dropping ropes which dragged on the ground. The mages did not make any designs to prevent intruders from attacking within. This assault last days, as dwarves made their way from level to level, carefully ascending the single staircase. The mages tried their best to defend, but lacked the strength in armed combat. The captain of the tower dropped the structure to the ground, not willing to let such a vehicle fall in the hands of the enemies.    The remains of the tower stands as a reminder of what the mages of Malunar did in the name of the New Empire. War clerics will make pilgrimages to the ruins to pledge themselves to Moradin

Purpose / Function

The purpose of the towers is to protect the city of Malunar. Designed to be able to launch magical missiles from the peak. When stationed at the city, they are able to pull energy from one another to increase power where needed. During the Subjugation War some were repurposed to become assault fortresses. Their effectiveness is remarkable, often arriving to soften targets before the main army launches their assault.

Alterations

Towers that were repurposed as assault towers had to be renovated to house a those that would operate them. Kitchens and bunk rooms were added along with storage facilities. Arrow slits where carved into some of the lower levers in order to hail fire upon ground forces.

Architecture

The towers were constructed centuries ago and slowly renovated based on the needs of the mages. They were made to be slimmer and taller than a typical defensive structure. The stone was smoothed and polished giving them a shiny appearance.
