Narthain the Sea Fox

Narthain, known as the Sea Fox, was one of the most infamous pirates in Therrmordia's history. A gnome from the Burning Coast, Narthain boasted that he had plundered ships, "from every nation that sails upon the seas."

Biography

Narthain was born in the city of Lusarstra, in the Burning Coast. The son of a sailor, Narthain went to sea at a young age, joining the corsairs during raiding season. As he grew older, Narthain's charisma and cleverness led to him gaining more and more responsibilities until he was finally given command of a ship.   Narthain spend the next three years plying the waters near Riccastra, before undertaking the raid that would make him a legend. Sailing through the Traitor Strait and evading elven patrols, Narthain took his ship deep into the Sheltered Sea before beginning a monthlong pillage of the unsuspecting shipping of the Kingdom of Waters Effluent. Escaping all the vessels hunting for him, Narthain returned to Lusarstra with his ship bursting with plunder. In fact, Narthain claimed he had taken enough booty to fill his ship twice over, and had been forced to throw the less valuable loot overboard.   Now known as the Sea Fox, Narthain spend the next decade alternating between piracy and privateering, as some realms, particularly in the Seven Jewels, were more than happy to pay him to raid someone else. Narthain also returned to the Sheltered Sea multiple times, earning the smoldering hatred of the elves. The Sea Fox became exceedingly wealthy, while dodging assentation attempts from both the Garnet Guild and the Subtle Ones. Eventually, Narthain was able to pay the guild to not accept more contracts against his life and to protect him from the subtle ones. He also spread his wealth among the gnomes of his city, becoming extremely popular.   When Narthain was one hundred and forty-seven he was chosen as the Corsair Lord of Lusarstra. Now in nominal command of the city's entire fleet, he determined to lead the largest raid ever. Taking every corsair ship at the city's disposal he repeated the deed that had made his name on a grand scale. Smashing the squadron guarding the Traitor Strait his fleet spent the summer looting and pillaging the entire Sheltered Sea. The Sea Fox showed an uncanny knack for maneuvering his fleet, dispersing it to pick off the most targets but being able to consolidate it again to ward off hunting warships. Th corsairs did not limit themselves to just taking ships, but plundered small coastal settlements as well. The pillaging only ceased when the elves stopped all shipping in the sea. Narthain led his ships home having completed the most successful raiding season in the history of the Burning Coast.   Two decades later, the Sea Fox would lead his fleet against the neighboring city of Concordatra. In the middle of winter the Corsair Lord split a small squadron from the main fleet and sailed to Concordatra. He then led a small night attack that burned the majority of the enemy fleet to the water. The remaining enemy ships pursed Narthain's small squadron, leaving the city open to attack by Lusartra's main fleet. After failing to catch the Sea Fox, the pursuers returned to find their city taken and surrendered.   As the ruler of two corsair cities Narthain continued to plunder and raid, until, in his two hundred and seventeenth year, he left with his ship to start another summer raiding season and never returned.
