Overdale (SC'19)

A City on the Rise

Written by Steve Tremblay

History

Overdale formed many decades ago from several separate small villages. They banded together for security and eventually grew to be one of the largest cities on Ellara.

Perched atop a cliff, to the south only an expanse of rocky ground leading to the ocean. The early city planners began building walls focusing on keeping out dangers from the Evergreen and White Wolf Valley.
The design of the city in the early stages was ambitious and consumed many nearby resources. Mainly lumber from the forest but quarries were dug, tunnels excavated and metals mined from far below.

As time progressed and trade grew, more people moved to the city requiring more materials for housing, construction of farms and utilities to support those endeavors.
Almost 20 years ago, the then Mayor Lucius Merridian suffered a heart attack and in the absence of a normal successor, the head of the clergy Zannon Carter assumed the role of temporary Mayor.

After an encounter with a group of adventurers who called Overdale home, Mayor Carter began a descent into xenophobia and plans to improve and extend the security came to life. With the adventurers eventually exiled, the scope of the city was changed. They would be the bastion of hope for all humans on Ellara, the non-human races branded as heathens and less than fit for the human world.

Renamed Overwatch by self-proclaimed King, Zannon Carter began consuming nearby resources at an incredible rate. He would begin claiming land, including encroaching on the Elves in the Evergreen and mining for all materials he could use for his forthcoming plans.
Carter requested help from two former archmages from Uman' Yiro who were key in the construction of the Warforged soldiers that city used for it's own security.

With Sekal Loreweaver and Emon Thermack by his side, Carter began creating a new army built out of wood, metal and magic.

Unknown to the public at large, the most important material needed for these new soldiers were the life force, some would say the souls of beings of equal size as the construction they would inhabit.
To this end, crime in Overwatch became a thing of the past. Many criminals, charged with the simplest of crimes became fuel for the machine. The citizens did not know what became of their family and friends who had been arrested but hundreds if not thousands of lives were ended to supply Carter with the army he needed to continue his extermination of non-humans.
As the Overwatch forces expanded their sphere of influence, all non-humans captured were brought back to the city to further enhance his will. Large creatures like mammoths were also imported to create huge mechanized units.

Eventually war came to the door of the city in the form of an army comprised of thousands of non-humans banded together from across Ellara. The gates were destroyed with the help of the ancient dragon Straad and Carter's reign came to a violent end.

Liara Bryos was unanimously elected by a council of military leaders to take over and for three years, she has led the city.

Renamed back to Overdale, remnants of Carter's rule have been slowly reversed and the city is once again fully integrated with races from around Theria.

The city is again on the rise. Resources are now used for the good of all. Trade with other nearby cities like Winterhaven, Durnhollow and Esterholt have been re-established and expanded. Liara intends to make the resources that Overdale has control over are given to those who need them the most.

Government

A single ruler generally leads the city, with a chain of back-ups in case the worst should happen.

Defences

Large stone walls lined with ballista and archers. Geographical isolation also helps keep the city safe.

Infrastructure

Overdale has access to running water, farms, sewers and most utilities associated with large cities.
