Submission

The most demanding trial of the order isn't even a trial they put anyone through, on paper. When an acolyte of the order can no longer handle the truth of the world, they often lose their minds, a condition the order calls Submission, named for the mind's subservience to the half-truths of the world. The typical course of treatment is an amnesic, but the damage is already done, and many who find themselves suffering from Submission drink themselves into a stupor with no idea why their life feels so empty, why the stories of the gods ring so hollow, or why they seem to be so distant from everyone else around them. The knowledge of the truth of the worlds may be gone, but such things leave an indelible mark on the mind, and no amount of amnesic or magic can hope to fix it. Most who survive the initiation into the order can tell stories of several people they knew who suffered from Submission, and while many view those lost to Submission to have died in service of a noble cause, some simply view them as weaklings who say the truth of the world and could no longer handle it.   Those who survive the first year of Submission, post-treatment, often go on to live mostly normal lives. Few become adventurers, because they feel as though the world has little to offer them. Some become orators or storytellers, telling fantastical stories with absolutely no basis in reality, but an amalgam of the truths of the worlds.
