Session 9 - Suspicions

Report:

Gundren's Goons head out of Phandalin beginning their trip north in search of Cragmaw Castle to save Gundren Rockseeker. When they reach the Triboar Trail they are ambushed by a group of three bugbears who begin shooting them with bows. The party fights back, with even Droop stepping in with his new sling. As the fight progresses the Bugbears close into melee combat dropping their bows in favor of a pair of daggers. Eventually, the party kills each of the bugbears, and Kailo searches one of the bodies and besides finding some silver pieces finds a folded piece of paper as well. He hands the paper to Xavien who unfolds and reads the note which reveals crude drawings of each of the members of the Gundren's Goons, the words 100 Gold Reward for the death of the party, and the symbol of the black spider. The party continues traveling until dusk when they make camp for the night. The next morning after an uneventful and uninterrupted night of sleep, the party breaks camp and begins their trek off the trail and north towards the Neverwinter Wood. Once in the woods, Aether decides to wild shape into a wolf to see if she can pick up and follow the scent of goblinoids. She manages to pick up a faint scent that she can follow but also notices that Droop's scent is wrong.

Eventually, Gundern's Goons make it to the ruined castle that the Cragmaws have been using as their base of operation. As the party stands there on the tree line observing the ruin, Aether's suspicions grow. The party begins to question Droop, asking him various questions. Xavien asks him a question in goblin and Droop doesn't seem to understand. Aether announces to the party that "That's not Droop" and Droop makes to flee but the party begins to attack Droop in an act to subdue the goblin, while Duncun turns away unable to bear what they are doing to his adopted son. The group beats on Droop as he tries to flee and cries out to Duncun for help. Xavien then casts sleep on Droop and he goes unconscious Aether immediately goes about tying the goblin up, and when he wakes Aether casts charm person and the party goes about questioning him once again. Droop pleads with the party saying they are no different than the bugbears that would pick on him and he only was going to run because he saw the same glint in Aethers eye as those bugbears. Droop being charmed, his answers seeming benign and the party unable to draw any conclusions, Duncun unties Droop and puts him in the back papoose. Xavien decides to cast detect magic as a ritual as Duncun goes about this and sees that there is no magical aura around the goblin despite the fact that he is supposedly under the influence of the charm spell......
