The Everlasting Colds

Uncompromising winds and storms ravage the land at the most northernly part of Illithea. The region known as the Everlasting Cold is the only completely uninhabitable area of Illithea, and no man dares try to cross it unless he is desperate or insane. There is no food here, no way to keep out the neverending wind or the frozen snow which coats everything which stays still for more than ten minutes in this region. No amount of resources could ever tempt the Northmen closest to the Everlasting Cold to ever brave it.

Geography

The Everlasting Cold is a vast plain of frozen tundra and snow covered trees. Mountains range throughout the region, and it is a very beautiful if uninhabitable world. There are glaciers and huge ice-covered lakes in the mountaious regions, and occasionally one of them will shift causing avalanches to cascade down the mountains or onto the glaciers. The biggest lake is called The Great Basin
Utterly frozen, the sun reaches the Everlasting Cold but does not warm it. There is constant snowfall and blizzards would be a common sight, were there anybody present to witness them. Occasionally an avalanche of snow cascades down the mountains, smothering and destroying anything in it's path. Heavy winds carry snowfall, in some cases for many miles, and the resulting drifts are quite beautiful if impossible to traverse even if humans should venture so far north.
The freezing temperatures and the location of the Everlasting Colds in Illithea cause coloured lights to appear in the sky; these are usually in the north of the region but occasionally are also visible to the Northmen living in the border mountain region.

Fauna & Flora

There are a large number of pine trees and other coniferous plants, but as everything is covered in a permafrost and a layer of snow, it is hard to say if anything more exotic ever grows. The few people who have ventured into the Colds return with sightings of trees and small snow covered shrubs; they also return fast, in many cases with a bad case of frostbite.
There are some bears, wolves, and some smaller mammals, but eking out a living here is incredibly hard and the animals that do survive are lean and starving. There are few animals who are well-fed; and they tend to be the pack leaders when they are, as they are the strongest simply by luck.
There are many rumours of creatures in the Colds which are huge, frightening, and nothing like anything seen in the lower provinces. Such stories are used by some Northmen parents to scare their children into behaving, but there has never been any confirmed sighting of such creatures nor have any chosen to venture further south into the inhabitable areas of Illithea.
