Nyanja

Three beautiful girls, dark skin glowing in the hot sun, run across the blazing sand from one building to another. One of them giggles as she catches the eye of a young man, maybe ten years older than her and fresh off his ship. He winks at her as she runs past him to join her two friends as they enter the local shop, ducking under the low eaves of the roof into the cool dark of the room.   Up in the crows nest of the huge merchant ship, the lookout gazes over the horizon. It has been several weeks since the crew saw dry land, and she is looking forward to seeing the new people; she has been told of the people in Clenia and their strangeness and longs to see it for herself. The salt breeze catches loose hairs from her braid and her eyes narrow as she catches her first glimpse of coastline, shouting her discovery to the crew below.   Dolphins leap in and out of the waves alongside a fishing vessel dodging the nets with agility. They play in the surf caused by the bow as other, less lucky fish, flip and twist in the nets.   Nyanja is a vast region dominated mainly by the ocean that gives it its unique feel. The people are sailors and travellers, not content with staying in one place for long and always looking for new discovery and new people to trade with. Long months on board ship have created a people who are not bored as long as they are moving, a people with a wicked sense of humour and a cheerful outlook.

Geography

Rainforests dot the provinces of Seab and Drelish, covering much of the in-land areas. The people live mainly on the coasts and the rainforests are therefore allowed to flourish except where they impede trade routes from Terramulta.   Some of the islands have been created by volcanic activity, and occasionally the volcanoes still erupt. These eruptions generally do not impact the people of the region unless there is a lot of ash produced, but the sight is something that the people enjoy much like those of other regions might enjoy a fireworks display.   Coral reefs along part of the coast are a very beautiful sight, with many tropical fish darting in and out of the coral formations.   Nyanja is very hot and tropical, with a monsoon season that sailors must be trained to navigate through if trade is to take place. Damp salt winds coming off the sea batter the ramshackle towns that sprung up along the coast, and the air is always humid.   Throughout the year there is not much variation in temperature and the people are very used to the heat and beating sun.   There is more rain in the rainforests, and mists often form over the volanic islands on the horizon.

Fauna & Flora

On the islands, palm trees abound. Sugar and tobacco form the only plantations that are a focus on-land, as so much of Mokweren life is trade and fishing; however, sugar is a common plant seen around the region.   Mushrooms are common, and in the rainforests all kinds of tropical plants and trees can be seen for those who do venture in. Towering trees form a large part of the horizon, and local children are adept at climbing to great heights, machetes on their backs, purely to harvest coconuts.   Most of the animals that abound in Nyanja are sea-bound. Turtles, dolphins, sharks and other large sea creatures abound, sharks being the most feared as the largest ones can cause vessel damage and kill sailors who happen to be in the water; they also terrorise the coastal towns and swimmers.   Fish are plentiful and fishing vessels cannot begin to decimate the populations.   On-land, snakes and lizards are often present, and sea birds are a common sight; in the rainforests, brightly coloured parrots swoop through the trees and the sound of bird and animal life is almost deafening.
