The Obsidian Sight Stone

The obsidian sight stone was a smooth black disc said to have been used by the first humans to commune with the spirits of the earth directly. It was shared from village to village, always available to anyone who needed it when a problem arose. When humans relied too heavily upon the stone, and sought more wisdom from the spirits rather than learn and solve their own problems, some of the spirits began to resent the use of the time. Cunning rabbit played a trick on the people and stole the sight stone, hiding it away where it could not be found. He then created a problem among the villagers decreeing that he would return the stone as soon as they proved themselves capable of solving their own problems using the knowledge the spirits had passed to them over the years.   It took some time for the people to resolve their problems without the intervention of the spirits. Pleased with the result of their efforts, the villagers sought to communicate with Rabbit.

Variations & Mutation

Many cultures share a similar tale of an obsidian stone. In the tales of the astral gods, it was used by the humans to transport the user's consciousness to the heavens and see the stars up close to divine their meanings. In the teachings of the Mother, it was a gift from the goddess to her most precious child so they may always have a way to commune with her. Many people take the many versions of the story as a sign that the item truly exists somewhere, though it has never been found.

Cultural Reception

To many indigenous tribes in the new continent, the legend of the obsidian sight stone is very dear to their culture and identity. Understanding not to rely too heavily on the assistance of the spirits of the earth is a fundamental lesson, though individual feelings on the existence of the stone vary. While some believe that it can be found and used to gain a deeper understanding of the wisdom of the spirits, others believe that the stone is lost forever and it is the will of the spirits that it never be found.
