Bloodhaze
Bloodhaze is the term given to the effects of consuming the drug of the same name. The condition is characterized by fever, red specks floating in the affected's vision, which are sometimes also visible physically on the eyeball, and a general obfuscation of vision.
Increased strength and a heightened sense of smell are among the desired effects of the drug. Those who consume it are aware of the risks but usually decide they need to advantage for a single important task.
The drug itself is created by taking the dried blood of certain magical beasts and grinding it to a powder. The power is then inhaled through the nose. The effects are near-instantaneous. Very few survive taking the drug, making the benefits short-lived.
Symptoms
Fever is the first symptom to appear as part of bloodhaze. A burning, or other uncomfortable sensation, in the eyes is common once the bloodhaze has begun to work through the system.
Treatment
There is no "cure" for bloodhaze, though there are some treatments that will ease the symptoms of those suffering. Poultices made from herbs and applied to the eyes will stave off the burning sensations, though if the symptom is severe then it may not relieve it completely.
Though rare, there are some individuals who have survived ingesting bloodhaze. It is said that the experience is painful and grueling.
Prognosis
Bloodhaze is fatal in 99% of cases. The human body is not meant to consume such a substance, not mingle in such a way with the physiology of the magical beasts.
Sequela
The rare few who survive bloodhaze are forever changed. While the fever will eventually break, changes in vision and cognitive function will never reverse. It is believed, due to the magical nature of the bestial source of the blood, that there are permanent changes in a person's reaction and use of magic. There has been little study on the subject.
