The Red Magpy Inn

Overview

A well-known establishment across the Cilostratan Expanse, the Red Magpy sits at the crossroads of many trade airways. A popular destination to stop and spend the night, known for their food and drink and especially for their policy of never asking questions.

History

Established by Magdalene Pyrite, she has been running the Inn for over 40 years. The site she built it at was a skyland originally housing a very basic stop over point. A series of cheap buildings for travellers to stop, have a meal and a cleanish place to sleep. She saw the opportunity to have something better there and make some money. Over time, the Inn has gone from one extensive building to now six or seven buildings of various sizes. She has the original main building housing the common room, the bar with a series of cheap rooms set into the attic space. Added alongside it is a building housing a kitchen with baking facilities and other cooking implements, with a small storeroom connected to it. There are also a series of buildings with rentable, higher quality rooms inside them. Magdalene found merchants liked to rent rooms for themselves and their retainers away from the rest of the common rabble. She includes in each of these, nicer furniture and a locked vault for valuables. She also sets them at an extortionate price.   A short time after starting the Inn, she had a series of tunnels dug into the skyland underneath the main building. They are quite extensive and have a series of storage rooms cut into them. These go all the way through the skyland to a hidden dock underneath. They use all this hidden infrastructure for the Inns principal purpose, and that is to run most of the smuggling operations happening in the area. Magdalene herself comes from a long line of smugglers on both the air and the sea.   She initially wanted to maintain the Inn as just a low-quality front, however she realised with a little more effort she could have a lucrative establishment and also keep the smuggling going as well. Making her a very rich woman.

Appearance

When she had the Inn built, Magdalene wanted it to be visually different from any of the other buildings found in the skyland. She found an architect who had read of some of the older cultures' designs during his education and got him to put her together something unique.   All the buildings in the Inn complex are similar, cylindrical walls with domed roofs. The curvature of the walls helps allow the winds of the region to pass by with minor damage to the building. The domed roofs also have more attic space than their slanted counterparts.   She still indulges in the streamers and hanging wind chimes that are popular in the expanse. There is such a thing as too different.
