Mayin

Overview

In the area that formally housed the skylands of the Cilostratan Expanse, you can find a very special metal. An iron ore that was touched by magical power and become infused with it, called Mayin. Sought after by anyone involved in magical artifice, this metal is very special because of its innate magical properties.

Appearance

Before its infusion of arcane power, this iron had some unique properties. If discovered earlier it would have been prized as a rare source of native metal. Native metal, also called telluric iron, being one found in its metallic form in the ground instead of in an ore. Magical researchers theorise this is the reason it has reacted to the arcane energies the way it has.   When found in the ground, it looks like a rock partially made from metal. Giving the deposits a silvery sheen. What sets Mayin apart from the appearance of normal telluric iron is the slight glow it also has. Some miners have also reported that while still buried in the ground, it is slightly warm to the touch.

Properties & Uses

Magical experimentation has discovered that Mayin is the best conductor for inscription networks. With its innate arcane charge, it doesn’t restrict or lessen the magical flow at all. This has allowed more detailed and extensive inscription to take place with a small arcane power source.   It also allows the transfer of power through itself with little feedback, like one receives through normal iron or steel, for example. This lets magical practitioners use it as a conduit to feed their power into a device. Before its discovery users risked a minor shock from arcane feedback which could break concentration and interrupt the working of rituals.

Locations

The only naturally occurring Mayin deposit now sustains the mining town of Chuumaa. The demand for this metal has caused the township to grow as opportunities for work expand. Having sustainable, consistent work seems to outweigh the downsides for many people.
