The Umbran Calendar
How Time Is Kept
A full rotation of the planet occurs in 24 hours, similar to real life earth. Umbra has two moons, one larger and one smaller, so they cannot use lunar cycle to keep track of months. Therefore, they use rough seasons. 24 Hours per Day 9 Days Per Week (Days named after the 9 Gods) 9 Weeks per season 4 season per year (one for each plane of existence). Therefore, there are 81 days per season, and 324 days per year. Technically, each year actually has 325 days. To account for this, every 9th year the world celebrates an added week between Naturum, and Luxum, known as Godsweek, and is celebrated widely by many cultures. The next Godsweek takes place in the year 2160 of the Third Age.Weekly Setup
The order of the days are: Peher's Day Utia's Day Ewjun's Day Nyla's Day Cureus' Day Euna's Day Rutan's Day Metarr's Day Rymjir's Day The week starts with Peher's day, after the God of Life, to signal the birth of a new week. It ends with Rymjir's day, after the God of Death, to signal the death of the week.Seasonal Setup
The equivalent to Spring, and the first season of the year, is Naturum to signal the spring growth of animal and plant life. The equivalent to Summer, and the second season of the year, is Luxum to signal the brightest portion of the year. The equivalent to Fall, and the third season of the year, is Elementium to signal the drastic change in weather leading towards winter. The equivalent to Winter, and the last season of the year, is Spiritum to signal the death of the year.Era's of the World
There exist three era's of the world as accounted for by humans, and adopted by most of the civilized world. First is referred to as the Elder Age. It is not known how long the world existed before this age, and thus counting time the years are counted backwards, similar to real life's BCE. The second is the Age of Transition. It is seen as being 4,263 years long, and accounts for the transitional period of Simmaessa to Humans (through Val'Odar and Ala'rii). Of course, this change was gradual, and the actual transitions between the ages has been widely debated. Ultimately, it was decided by King Herid of Brevale on what year they would consider the changing of the age, based arbitrarily on records showing a splitting of the Simmaessa to Val'Odar and Var'bodan. The same king based the starting of the Third Age on the day he gained the throne after his father's death. Therefore, the human era system is as follows: Elder Age: Unknown - yr. 1 Age of Transition: yr. 1 - yr. 4,263 Third Age: yr. 1 - yr. 2158 (Current year) While most other races acknowledge the three ages presented by humans, some use a two age system... The Elder Age (using the same point of change as humans, but only having a Second Age (the New Age), ignoring the human idea of an transition age into a third age.Examples of Time and Dates
As kept in history text or official documents: 3rd Peher's Day of Elementium, yr. 3,362 of the Age of Transition 5th Rutan's Day of Luxum, yr. 6,792 of the Elder Age 9th Cureus' Day of Naturum, yr. 1,168 of the Third Age Rymjir's Day of the Godsweek, yr. 2160 of the Third Age. However, this can be annoying in standard talk. Many commoners have simplified the system, referring to ages by a number and sometimes adding up the days of the season. Examples: 26th day of Naturum, 2166, 3rd Age 2nd day of Luxum, 3621, 2nd AgeRemove these ads. Join the Worldbuilders Guild
