Westmarch to Salvus
What is a Westmarches campaign
A Westmarches campaign is where the players are in charge of the narrative. It is a sandbox-style campaign where the schedule happens on the fly- Instead of a scheduled session every week, players instead schedule a session directly with the DM
- There is no regular plot: The players decide where to go and what to do. There was no mysterious old man sending them on quests. No overarching plot, just an overarching environment.
- All adventure lies to the West, heading back East returns them home where peace and tranquility prevail.
Setting: Westhiar
- Tylarian and Galeon explorers have found a new landmass 100 leagues away off the continent of Salvus westwards. The governments of Salvus have each put resources towards the Pathfinder's Society to explore this new frontier.
- The players are part of the Pathfinder's Society, a intergovernmental organisation that aims to explore the new continent Westhiar
- Westmarch has all the creature comforts of a Tylarian border town such as high walls and towers, inns and canteens topped up with supply lines from home in Salvus and trade ships traveling to and fro Salvus and Westhiar protected by military ships from all nations.
- Map of Westhiar can be found here.
Start of session
- Each session always starts with the players at the town of Westmarch.
- They need to spend 1D6 gold per character level to upkeep their lifestyle in Westmarch. This goes to upkeep of weapons, food, drink and accommodation in Westmarch. New characters on their first session are exempt from this requirement.
- Pathfinder Society members who cannot pay this cost will receive a -1 to their Attack Rolls, Ability Checks and Ability Saves.
- Points of interest reside in the outlying areas around Westmarch in hexes
- Travel to areas (hexes) takes up travel time in-game but does not take up real-life time
- Based on the initial scheduling session with the DM, there is an immediate session objective available to be reached by the end of the session.
During the session
- Player Characters (PCs) will endeavour to accomplish the mission objective by the end of the 4-hour session
- If they are not able to accomplish the session in time, they will automatically return to Westmarch with the loot, knowledge and information they have acquired since the start of the session.
End of session
- If the PCs are able to accomplish the session objective, they will acquire XP that they can apply directly to their character level
XP is applied as below
- Completing the session objective awards a DM-stipulated amount of XP points.
- Accumulating an amount of XP points equal to your character level allows the character to level up:
Example: If Bob the Goblin is level two, on completing an adventure session that awards him 2 XP points which brings him to level three. Any excess XP points is carried forward to his next level.
- Accomplishing side-objectives also award additional XP points
Treasure, Loot and Magic Items
- Westmarch as a campaign style is by design a highly competitive style where players compete with each other
- Certain adventures are more likely to award magic items compared to treasure.
- Other adventures are much more likely to award treasure compared to magic items.
- Certain adventures awards a little of both magic items and also award faction favour that can be provide access to magic items, privileges and special equipment and manpower to help in adventures.
- Faction favour can provide access to uncommon and rare magic items of limited quality and quantity in exchange for treasure.
- Treasure is always equally divided as stipulated under Pathfinder Society bylaws
