The Unread Message

Past Transactions

The Message has been passed down through the eons. It has not followed any particular family line but rather sold on to person after person. The price has risen to astronomical heights and continues to rise exponentially.   At no time has the Message been opened or read. Each owner in historical memory has been too afraid to run the risk that the Message is inconsequential and hence lose all its value in an instant. Instead it is guarded at great expense to preserve the mystery of its content and potential origin.   Speculation has grown over time. Debate persists concerning the subject of the message. Such discourse has acted both to bring individuals to fall deeply in love with other as they share their most inner selves with each other, but at the other end of the spectrum it has triggered wars between nations and organisations.   Many believe it details the origin of the world and the stars they see in the skies. The more religious in the population insist it is a list of the real names of the gods and to look upon them would invoke their ire and revenge for such impudence would be swift.   Yet others believe in a gentler reason behind the composition. They argue the content is a poem that when read will fill all hearts with joy and unify all races and peoples into a common goal of betterment for all and the protection of the world - as such they have lobbied for it to be opened so it can be read to the masses. As is natural in the world at this time, this is dismissed as naive poppycock - in particular by the subsequent owners of the Message who are only interested in its future value.   The current owner is unknown to the general population. The penultimate owner was a Cedern Pasahn, a Prince from the Eastern reaches of the World. It is believed, although he won't admit it, that he was eager to sell it on after a neighbouring kingdom vowed to capture the Message and brutally kill him in the act.   The Current Owner The mystery surrounding the current owner may soon be at an end. For the first time in its recollectable history, the Message has fallen into the hands of someone who cares nothing for its value, but wishes to know and understand its content and meaning. They have not opened it yet but once they have gathered those with whom they have chosen to be witness to this event, the wait that has spanned the eons will be at an end.

I love the concept of holding it unopened lest it become worthless. Great idea!
