Alexander Asturgez

Viceroy of New Ilandia Alexander Solomon Asturgez, the Explorer of New Worlds

Who is the most famous explorer in the recent history of your world? Why are they so famous?

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Alexander was not particularly strong and rather fragile in build. Nevertheless, he was very fast and, as it turned out, a great ship's captain. As he grew older, he gained weight until he died of a hereditary disease.

Identifying Characteristics

You could easily identify Alexander by his scar right under his left eye. He received this scar when he was fighting against an indigenous tribe (probably the Siima). Even though he himself had to retreat, his men won the battle. He was injured by a stone directly under his eye and his personal surgeon Owen Wilson later stated he was only a couple of centimetres away from partial blindness.

Physical quirks

In his later years, Alexander limped, possibly in part because of inflammations on his battle wounds and his increasing weight.

Mental characteristics

Education

He got private education and attended the Royal Naval Academy in Dugusto. He also attended the Military Academy in Aupia.

Accomplishments & Achievements

His greatest achievement, of course, was discovering Asturgazia in 1531. This affected the world history like nothing ever did before, and brought Ilandia the power it needed to rule the world in the following two centuries. Historians stated:
Of all the people of his era, he has left his mark on world history the most. Even more than the recent lunar bases, this has motivated mankind to even greater things. It is almost impossible to exaggerate his role, or the role his discovery played in world history.
-Alas'Mah Dierendael, "The Discovery of Asturgazia" (2019)
Another achievement of him was establishing a prosperous viceroyalty out of nothing but what the country has to offer and some Ilandian Goods. He created a revolutionary new, almost democratic system to rule his colony.   His military accomplishments too shouldn't be underestimated, he and a few hundred underarmed men were able to defeat armies thirty times as big and eventually brought peace. He was, according to his men, a military genius.

Morality & Philosophy

Alexander was deeply religious and believed it was his holy duty to Christianise every infidel which crossed his path. When he was younger he got a lot of problems with the Violetists minority because of this.   He believed the indigenious people of Asturgazia were inferior to the Ilandians, but deeply believed they could become useful members of society by educating them.   He had a lot of respect for certain women, such as mothers, and believed childless women were "even more savage" than the indigenious people.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

He primarily is motivated by his urge to "civilise" the natives and to teach them about the true God and Christianity.   But other motivations of his were his blatant greed and his tendency to support his own offspring and make life as easy as possible for them. He also genuinely believed he served the most Christian Monarch of all Monarchs, Rodrick VII.   About Rodrick VII he wrote:
Never has there been a more righteous and Catholic monarch than King Rodrick VII, peace and prosperity be upon him. It was he who made Ilandia the superpower it is today, it is he who brought prosperity to the people of Ilandia. May God be with him.
-Alexander Solomon Asturgez, about Rodrick VII, 1537
His loyalty to the king didn't mean he always followed his orders, though. Still Alexander en Rodrick VII were good friends until death.

Virtues & Personality perks

Alexander was a very capable captain and military commander, as well as a gifted political leader. Also, despite his blatant racism, he was a more reasonable ruler towards his native subjects than many viceroys after him. Another feature of his reign was that he had a vision for the future and a lot of ambition and independence, he had plans for this new vast continent. His successors, on the other hand, were primarily short-sighted puppets of the Ilandic kings.

Vices & Personality flaws

His greatest downsides were his extreme stubbornness, coupled with his inability to submit to royal decrees. Today, he is also rightly criticised for his blatant racism and unjust treatment of religious minorities during his rule.

Personality Quirks

He used to bite on a silver coin before going on an expedition, a long time before it became a widespread tradition.

Quotes & Catchphrases
The beauty and vastness of this country is beyond my comprehension. It is a true miracle that God has created such a beautiful land for us. It is altogether too easy to find food here, and I beg you, O King, to grant me the funds I need to turn this land into a true paradise in your and God's name.
-Alexander Solomon Asturgez, to King Rodrick VII (1531)
The simplicity of gathering sustenance in this continent continues to amaze me. This has unfortunately contributed to the laziness of the indigenous savages, who have lived without care for millennia. The difficulty of teaching them discipline and respect for authority continues to amaze me.
-Alexander Solomon Asturgez, to King Rodrick VII (1538)
I will teach this continent civilisation and true religion at the cost of the whip of royal discipline.
-Alexander Solomon Asturgez in a speech to his noblemen (1546)
