If Leila Katz-Kashif could describe the nature of her life as succinctly as possible, it would be on the fringes. Born to a Jewish mother and a Muslim father, Leila grew up with a very unique family situation. While her family tried their best to let her figure out her own identity, she couldn't help but feel like she was expected to conform to one set of traditions or the other. It didn't help matters much that money was always tight in the household. Between her mom's job as a librarian and her dad's job as an auto mechanic, the best housing situation they could reliably afford was a manufactured home on the edge of her hometown of Arkham, Massachusetts. Leila was never much for socializing either, and she spent much of her school years on decent speaking relationships with her classmates but never really having any true friends. She was a ghost on the edge of your vision; observing everything but never interfering.

This all changed after Leila graduated high school. The initial plan was to get a four-year degree from Miskatonic University with a combination of a scholarship, a campus job, and her uncle being on the faculty helping to foot the bill. What she wasn't expecting was the lawyer of the late multimillionaire Sigmund Kriemhild (who's apparently her distant relative) showing up at her house to announce she'd been chosen to inherit his entire fortune, including his stately mansion. Overnight, Leila became the talk of Arkham and Public Enemy Number 1 to the Kriemhilds, Sigmund's pretentious and cutthroat old-money family. Further complicating matters, while exploring her new home, Leila made an important discovery: Magic exists, and the Kriemhild family is one of the most powerful magic families in the country.

But once Leila takes special interest in something, she does everything she can to learn as much as she can about it. So with the help of her butler Vincent (the mansion came with a butler, by the way) and some new friends she's made (she's also trying to put effort into making real friends now), she plans to carve out a real identity for herself in the world of magic and become the best witch she can be. And nothing, not even the Kriemhild family, is going to stand in her way.
