The Apex of Vol Yhaera (Submission Article #2)

Vol Yhaera is a land ruled by change and defined by stagnation. With each gust of wind Mould is scattered and dried, Irzhi are hatched, and Myxi seeds are spread; the very surface of the world changes according to its whim.   But no matter how hard the wind gusts, three things always stay the same. A bottomless abyss lies to the south, the northern half of the tooth is bordered and bound by inscrutable, implacable stone walls, and at the very tip of the world, where these walls converge, there is a place unlike any other. A place where the stone is brown and wet, and where the damp ground is covered with a thick green moss. A place where the wind is challenged for dominance of Vol Yhaera.   At the Apex of Vol Yhaera, the wind does not blow; instead, a stream of water flows from a crack in between the walls of the world. Sometimes it is hardly more than a trickle, others it is a flowing, rushing torrent, but no matter how it flows, it, like the Wind, carries gifts upon its tides. Great chunks of Iron, seeiming to form spontaneously in places where the water flows. Bitter, edible green moss growing thickly upon the stone banks. And the water itself, cool and clean, unmarred yet by the acrid air or chalky stone of the Wastes.   The bounty of the Apex is unlike anything else on Vol Yhaera, indeed many consider it heretical. But heretical or not, the Apex produces necessities for life on Vol Yhaera. Katanari don't eat very often, but even rarely hunting the Irzhi for food is an untenable proposition. Likewise, while the Mould and the Irzhi hide provide adequate shelter and clothing, they cannot properly be formed into tools like the Iron can.   The Apex is inhabited by a special line of Katanari, known as the Okunta, or Tenders. Unlike the other Katanari, who inhabit the Wastes and spend their time gathering mould, searching for Myxi, and doing anything they can to survive, the Okunta live in the relative peace of the veil, freed from many of the dangers carried upon the wind. Though some resent the Okunta for their security, many recognize its necessity, as the practices of how to best gather the moss and iron without interrupting the flow of water are strictly Okunta tradition.   The general agreement between the two groups is to let each fulfill their role; the wandering Katanari will hunt Mould and Myxi and trade it for the Okunta's moss and iron. Such is the way the world is.
