Lady of the Lake

The Virtuous Maiden

Written by Mlawt

Verteaux Lys du Lac (a.k.a. Marwoleath; Dame du Lac, Damsel Huntress)

Amidst the wood, deep in the north, carved out by ancient ice forms there lies a crystal pool, calm and serene; not even the wind dare breathe upon its surface. Here, the leaves the fall from the bough, sail of their accord to adorn the path to its shores. Here, the pad refuses the lily, its beauty overshadowed by that which lay within. Here, the legends of champions who seek wisdom, courage and glory are confronted with humbling beauty and grace relinquish their arms. Here, there are tales of the meek who become dragon-slayers.   To those that wish it, the Lady of the Lake provides council and comfort. But Her Grace must be earned, this is a constant. Whether Fey or Common Folk, Man or Dwarf, Elf or Sylvan; the Lady does not reveal herself to all, but only the most worthy of the Realm.

Holidays

The Lady makes Her presence known amongst the wood on cool, clear nights. On nights she walks the wood quiets, nary a sound but a soft, soothing breath. The Unseelie have taken to calling these days, those when the Moon is Full and when the Moon turns New, as Rituals of Celebration (Her Holy Days). The wood seems silent from its usual commotion; the birds flit between branch and bush, searching for bits and baubles to place at the foot of Ard-Mhéara; great beasts burrow into the forest floor, burying their heads in reverence; satyrs and pixies light the procession; the Great Fey gather their host, bathed in starlight, trooping from the heart of the Brec'hwood in the Clos Trench to their home-under-the-hill, Ard-Mhéara. For a brief few hours, the wild Faeriewood is the picture of serenity. In honor of her name, once the night has passed, the Unseelie unleash all manner of trickery, malice, and violence.   The Athrú Solais "Changing of Light", or the Solstices & Equinoxes / the Four Seasons: When, in the course of the year, the temperatures rise and fall; and the earth swells and gives its bounty; and the leaves come springing gay and sway and turn; then the Faerie can be found, upon that appointed time, so as to mark the change. Primarily, the Unseelie are of the Court, or better said the philosophy, of Winter and Autumn seasons. That being, they are more subversive, devious, and trooping than their Spring and Summer counterparts. They entertain behavior of seeking and making trouble, striking out against slights, and hunting outside the wood for champions. However, the Lady has given rise to a new opportunity and one to be relished. As the Fey remain cut-off from the home, they are encouraged during the seasons to "play" at the other Courts of Faerie. To engage and act as if they were part of another Court, without repercussion or commitment (which any fey will tell you is their life's goal). And so in each of these months the fey of the Brec'hwood attune their personalities to those of the different seasons as they will it. In Spring, they are gay; in Summer, passionate; in Fall, morose; in Winter, placid. The days that mark the "change of Court" are the solstices & equinoxes. For the two or three days each singular celestial event occurs, the fey become wild with excitement. Faeries spring around the wood, dazzling and painting bark, branch, leaf, and stone with designs of the season. Spirits rise up and fill the forest with music and song, chasing animal to and fro: sometimes herding, sometimes scaring. The Brec'hwood is painted in spectacular majesties or stripped to naked menace. Every change is a new way to occupy the ever-fickle and restless Unseelie Fey, and they are (mostly) joyed to do it.
