The Ton'Gaur

The Ton'Gaur, or the Awakening of the Storm, is a ceremony performed on most orcs when they reach adulthood at age 14. Its purpose is to test for and awaken any innate sorcerous powers an orc might possess. While sorcery is still very rare among orcs, it is significantly more common than any other race. Storm sorcery, to be specific, though orcish sorcerers of other types exist much more rarely. Anth'Tkur, the orcish capital city in the Waste, is ruled by a caste of storm sorcerers known as the Lahi'Gaur. Any orc with storm sorcery, no matter how strong is invited into their ranks. While this sorcery often surfaces by adulthood, it may lay dormant until triggered. The Ton'Gaur's purpose is to provide that trigger, causing an orc's sorcerous powers to flare into life.   The Ton'Gaur is really quite simple, though quite effective. It must be performed by a Lahi'Gaur, who grips the new adult by the arm and channels lightning into their body. This is typically quite painful, but rarely lethal. However, a heart condition could lead to the process being fatal, though not always. If an orc possesses storm sorcery, the Ton'Gaur will typically provoke them into releasing their first spell, which is typically wild and powerful. It can be quite dangerous, so witnesses to the ritual are typically instructed to stay back. For both Lahi'Gaur and ordinary orcs, the Ton'Gaur leaves a lasting mark on the part of the body that received the shock: A branching, feathered scar. This scar, called the Mark of the Storm or Droth'Gaur, is a symbol of an orc's passage into adulthood, and most wear it proudly, uncovered by clothing. If wearing armor, most still cover it, but most Lahi'Gaur armor has a branching lightning design over the part of the body the scar is on, sometimes even a perfect replica of their Droth'Gaur.
