Reckoner Prosthetics

The most feared pirate crew in the Waste, the Reckoners, all possess a common trait that is a direct cause of their great renown. Pieces of their bodies, or sometimes most of them, are replaced by metal contraptions, prosthetic arms, legs, eyes, organs, and more. These creations, and the terrible curse they bear, are both the reason they are so feared, and the reason they were created in the first place.

Utility

For the most part, Reckoner prosthetics function like the parts they have replaced, only better. They are much more durable, more efficient, and just all around improvements of their weak, fleshy counterparts. The more heavily augmented are incredibly hard to kill, capable of going on fighting even when riddled with bullet holes. Sometimes a Reckoner will possess a prosthetic that carries additional functions beyond those of the original part. Perhaps an arm is capable of doubling as a rifle, or a pair of lungs gives the Reckoner the ability to breathe fire.

Manufacturing

Only Brasslung Bill is capable of creating a prosthetic. The most skilled gnomish and dwarvish artificers could study every single aspect of one such device down to the molecular level, rebuild it perfectly, and would still be unable to replicate its functions. This is due to the nature of the invention's origin, as Bill was the only one who made the pact with The Devil that allowed him to perfect it.
Inventor(s)
This prosthetic technology was originally created by William Peters, now known and feared as Brasslung Bill. However, its creation would have never been possible without the assistance of a certain fiend, known by the simple moniker "The Devil." For all his blueprints and fancy tools, William could not get his invention to function effectively. After trying everything he could yet never managing to make his invention work, despite knowing he was on the edge of a breakthrough, William was driven to extreme measures. He made a deal with The Devil, to give him what he needed to complete his creation, but at the cost of his soul after death.
Access & Availability
Brasslung Bill keeps his creation to himself and his comrades, and does not give it freely. He once tried to market it, but its fiendish origins left it with a taint, cursing any who used it with the mark of The Devil. Due to this, few would end up using it even if he marketed it. His fellow Reckoners, however, are for the most part already tainted by His mark, and so they accept it freely.
Complexity
Reckoner prosthetics are complicated things. The appear to be bizarre, hissing amalgamations of metal, gears, and pistons, though more often than not they have a decent resemblance to the part they are to replace. All prosthetics are powered by the white coal, and require its magically infused smoke to work. For those who have few augments, this can be achieved by placing white coal within the prosthetic, which typically has some method of burning it. For those who possess many more, there are more options, be that placing it within a central burner, or otherwise imbibing the smoke. Brasslung Bill prefers to power himself via puffing cigars filled with white coal, which may be how he earned his name, as he's rarely seen without one between his fingers.

I love pirate crews. I love how they have their own prosthetic inventions, making them more than just thieves. Very intuitive!

I plan on writing up a full article on the Reckoners themselves soon, probably after I'm done with this wave of summer camp prompts.

Love the setting you're creating. Brasslung Bill and his devil powered steam-punk-vibe prosthetics are awesome.
