Charybdis

Charybdis is the name given to a massive whirlpool of sand, located near the center of the Waste. This vortex spins constantly clockwise and inwards, pulling in anything that finds itself within it with stunning force. After all, while it appears to whirl sluggishly, this is merely because of its massive size. People aren't the only ones who fall victim to its grasp, as its pull is largely inescapable by even those creatures native to the Sands. While the majority of these beasts know to stay away, occasionally one will stray too close and be sucked into its depths.   The cause of Charybdis' existence is unknown, as is the case with most of the Waste's geography. It is most likely magical in nature, but that is about as far as knowledge about it goes. Where it leads is entirely unknown as well, as any who have ventured within have never returned. Many speculate about it, but ultimately it is agreed upon that it could really lead just about anywhere, in this plane of existence or another.   Charybdis is not easily traversable, which is quite unfortunate as it lies almost in the middle of the Waste, making it the bane of those who often travel long distances across the Waste. No wastebones exist in it, presumably either having been sucked in or having never been there in the first place. This makes building pylons quite difficult, and due to Charybdis' size, even those pylons built at its edges do not spread ambient magic very far within. This makes Charybdis one of the only places in the Waste where the sky is actually constantly visible. Unfortunately that means that trains cannot travel over it, and obviously sandmounts would be sucked in. The only real way to travel directly over Charybdis is via flight, but it is not a common method of transportation in the Waste.
