The Naga

The Naga were a highly civilized society of three nations, each prone to war with the others as well as with some of the aliens with whom they came in contact. Most notable was their initially peaceful relationship with the Auk’kheem (the Builders) that existed for eons, but turned suddenly violent and resulted in the apparent annihilation of the Builders in an event called the War of Shadows. Little is known about the origin of the conflict, except that it was treated as a holy war by the Naga.

Among this race, war was considered an art. Youths of all genders trained in combat from childhood, and those who excelled went on to fine education and government positions. Warriors were scholars and vice versa. The Naga considered all other races to be inferior to them. Persons who did not measure up to their standards – including other Naga – were utilized as a menial labor force. Slavery was a foundation upon which their society functioned, though benevolent treatment of such workers was mandated by law.

To this species, mind, body and spirit were inseparable and inviolate. To dishonor the body was a heinous sin punishable by death. Tattoos, piercings and cosmetic alterations of the flesh were scandalous. The Naga were racial purists and declared war on the Auk’kheem for experimenting with their DNA; however, following the near annihilation of the Builders, the Naga discovered the information they had been given was a lie explicitly designed to ignite violent reaction. To pay for this mistake, the Naga dispersed themselves through the Wheel of Worlds in penance, separating themselves from each other in order to pay with their own lives for this error. Unable to reproduce, the Naga died out in a single generation.
