Toh'rian Settlement in The Wheel | World Anvil

Toh'rian (Tor-re-an)

Toh'rian is the capital city of the Ochal Confederacy and sits at the southern extreme of the country. It is a bastion of civilisation on the forefront of the Ochal Confederacy's defence against the Grey Horde. Beyond her bleak grey stone walls lies nothing by devastation and unending hordes of the undead.

Demographics

Much like the rest of the Ochal Confederacy, all races are welcome and represented within Toh'rian, with almost no racial disharmony.

History

Toh'rian is a city that predates The Purge. In the waning days of the Hazrad Imperium, Toh'rian was the primary defensive position protecting the rebelling Barons. Over the two millenia that followed, her role as protector of the Barons has not changed. For thousands of years Toh'rian has been the bulwark that has protected the Confederacy. Other cities are larger, more prosperous, or more innovative, but Toh'rian has long been the most important city in the Confederacy, as should she fall the soft underbelly of the Ochal Confederacy would be laid bair for her enemies to attack. This position as vital ground is the reason she is the Capital city, and also home to the Ochal Legion.

Points of interest

Her long history as a military city has led to her breeding some of the most accomplished military commanders in the surface of Autumna. Indeed, Toh'rian is home to the Ochal Military Academy, the foremost military officer training academy on Autumna. Potential officers from across the varied nations of Autumna attend the academy, building both milItaly capabilty in those nations allied to the Ochal Confederacy, as well as strengthening diplomatic relations through exchanged ideas.

Architecture

Toh'rian is one of the greatest surviving cities on Autumna. She is surrounded by 100 foot tall granite walls, interspersed by slender grey towers that the locals will tell you pierce the clouds. The towers are known as the 'Topless Towers of Toh'rian', and though they are not truly toilets, they are amongst the tallest mundane structures on Autumna.   Unlike most walled cities, Toh'rian no longer has a slum district outside of the wall. Prior to the rise of the Grey Horde she had a great ring of wooden structures where the poorest citizens lived, known as the Bread District. During the first undead attacks after Asha fell, the Bread District took the full brunt of the undead onslaught and was destroyed. In order to prevent such catastrophic loss of life again, the Barons decreed that no building may be constructed within 5 miles of the city walls.   Within the city are several older city walls, which now form part of the city's layered defences. Buildings in the city are primarily granite, with a tenancy towards function over form, resulting in few decorative aspects or embellishments.

Geography

Toh'rian guards the entrance to the Ochal Confederacy, dominating the only path through the Raven's Peak Mountain range large enough to march an army through. To her front is the bleak rocky landscape of the mountains, littered with the corpses of a hundred battles with the dead, and to her rear spread the rolling plains of the southern Ochal Confederacy. This stark contrast is ample reminder for the people of Toh'rian of what they fight for. To their back is the soft belly of the oldest surviving nation on Autumna. To her front, the grey hellscape the Grey Horde is slowly transforming all of Autumna into.

Natural Resources

Being situated with the mountains to her front, and plains to her back, Toh'rian has ample access to both Agriculture and minerals. Originally Tshe had a huge strategic and economic weakness, in that she is not situated on a natural waterway, such as a river or the ocean. However, in the year 582 AP construction was completed on the Ochal Canal, which links the city to the ocean to the south. This 62 mile dwarf constructed canal utilises the extensive underground cavern networks in the area to drop below the surface 2 miles from the walls of Toh'rian and resurface at the coast.
