Akvakkion (ack-vack-e-on)
Akvakkion is the youngest and northernmost of the principalities of New Lauria. The principality began as an unincorporated colony in the early 900s when settlers from Forsephion migrated down the Hardwater River, and was officially founded in 1005 by a land-grant in viceroyalty to the House of Avak by Emperor Domias II. After the collapse of the Laurion Empire, a power struggle ensued between colonial Governor Calex Cirius, and Colas Eubes Rinavak, the contemporary head of the House of Avak. However, as in most places, the power of the current ruler was limited in scope, and anarchy reigned throughout the Dark Age. After a period of near-Anarchy during the Dark Ages, the remnants of the House of Avak solidified control over the state in 2865. However, despite their natural claim to the land, the rulers of the House of Avak were ousted quickly during the Second Northern Conquest. The organization of the political structure of New Lauria following the failure of the short-lived Kingdom of New Lauria.
Large portions of Akvakkion are inhospitable. Hot, dry winds roll in off the Seething Sea to the North, giving rise to the White Wastes, the desert which dominates northern Akvakkion. Avak's Spine, the mountain range running through the principality, prevents wet rains from the East from reaching the desert. These rains then give rise to the Lowlands, a large wetland system south of Avak's Spine. The White Wastes are also characterized by high salt levels: the desert is bordered on the East by Mel's Fork and on the South by the Hardwater River saltwater rivers which flow down from the Crystal Fields of Forsephion. Monsoon floods and desert winds distribute salt across the floodplain. The area between Avak's Spine and the Hardwater should, by all accounts, be capable of sustaining some kind of life, but the area, called the Stormlands is constantly dominated by lightning storms, leaving it barren. The most hospitable sections of Akvakkion are the southeastern corner, a valley called the Highlands, which is sheltered from the harsh climate surrounding it by mountains; and the eastern tip, a river delta formed by the river Tess' Run, which flows down from the isolated Stone Tooth.
Despite this inhospitable climate, Akvakkion has had some settlement throughout known history. Ruins from all time points, dating back to even Pre-Clian, dot the landscape, including one Dwarven settlement site. The continued inhabitation of the Akvakkion area is likely due to bountiful deposits of natural resources. The Highlands, at some point in history, were home to a vast vein of orichalcum, the only known source in Lauria. Materials can also be filtered out of the salty soil of the White Waste, and the Lowlands are home to an incredible amount of unique species. Furthermore, the area is rich in more common resources, including iron, coal, and copper.
Structure
The head of state is the Prince, a feudal monarch who rules from the royal palace in Avak. The Prince legally owns all land in the country, but his land is granted in fief to 8 dukes, who grant land in fief to subservient lords. Land is granted in exchange for taxes and levies. The Prince is a member of the Diet of Princes, a super-national body composed of the rulers of several of the independent realms in New Lauria. The feudal structure is complex, but is the same for all members of the Diet.
