Lithra Character in The Wellspring Dragons | World Anvil

Lithra

Lithra qua Tindrel is a motivated and intelligent woman, though not as ambitious as some. She prefers the quieter streets of Tindrel to the crowded ones of Javone, Emphatrisse and Solarienne, and has very little want to leave the comfortable and familiar. She takes her duties as a city councilor very seriously, especially compared to several of her peers. She has little time to spare for those who inherited their positions when family members perished in the recent Merren conflicts, and who wallow in their new social standing rather than focus on leading their community.   Her voice carries weight among the older, more conservative members of the city elite, a rarity when most see military service as a necessary proving ground. She understands many see her father reflected in her, and does not hesitate to use their memories to her advantage. While she has strong opinions, those she sees as authorities can sway her in a different direction, while she stubbornly rejects the ideas of people she deems inferior.

Early Years

Lithra is the youngest child of Lord Caring and Lady Emalah qua Tindrel. Her father, a kind and devoted man, doted on her, a contrast to her indifferent and supercilious mother. Her two eldest siblings vacated Tindrel as soon as they came of age, leaving the younger two at their mother's mercy. While her mother drew away, Lithra grew close to her brother, Kedris, and had a happy childhood following in his footsteps.   In her teen years, her father's position as Presiding Councilor of the City Council began to weigh on her. She found social encounters particularly demanding, for her mother rarely approved of her behavior, and tended to chastize her for days after. In an attempt to please her, Lithra began to wear the restrictive yet revealing dresses in sumptuous materials other noble daughters wore, drowned herself in jewelry, and did her best to live up to the look. Her brother thought it silly, but she did attract attention and approval, and other girls admired her. For the first time in her life, her mother began to show more than fleeting approval towards her.   While she did not completely forgo higher education, she did step back from classes to concentrate more on her social standing. She accepted invitations to many exclusive parties and get-togethers, oftentimes accompanying her brother. She privately conceded many families sought to ally themselves with the Presiding Councilor's kin in an attempt to influence council decisions, but she enjoyed the attention.

Merren Civil War

Lithra had ignored most politics until the despot came to power. She knew that the ziohanexh had slowly, steadily disappeared or died, until only a handful of high nobles remained. Her father, as one of them, was deeply concerned, but few, other than the remaining ziohanexh, thought much of it, especially since so many leapt at the opportunity to fill the leadership void. She tried not to worry, but she drowned in the fear of her father being taken from her.   The future despot instigated a civil war with the surprise backing of several nobles. They assassinted the king, taking advantage of the power vaccuum left by destruction of the ziohanexh. Once in power, the despot began a more thorough purge of the Merren elite--including those who had backed him. Families disappeared, fortunes disappeared, once-happy merchants were stripped of their businesses and sent to work houses, to labor with those they once employed. Too many that Lithra knew became destitute, disappeared, or died. Her once-happy social life disintigrated with the noble class.   Caring, who had fought against the despot, did not keep his opinion of the new ruler particularly hidden. Lithra became a mediary between frantic, enraged nobles and her father, all of whom wanted the despot gone. It was at this time she met a young, fiery man named Vendry, who had become a go-between as well. They began a secret but intense love affair, and found happiness despite the devastation surrounding them.   Then her father disappeared and her mother, fearing for her life, fled to Soline. Lord Sovil took the reins of the city council, and became far more conciliatory towards the despot. Lithra, desperate to find out what happened to her father, and furious at Sovil's complacency, stepped over his boundaries time and again, accompanied by Kedris, Vendry, and a few friends. Sovil began a nasty retaliaton designed to destroy the reputations of both Lithra and Kedris, but faltered, however, when other council members spoke for them and chastized his heavy hand. They voted for Kedris to take his father's council chair, which gave Lithra more access to documents and people than she originally had. Sovil placed as many obstacles in her way as he could, though few succeeded.

Illena's Invasion

Lithra still had not discovered the fate of her father by the time the Illenans invaded. Despite Sovil's reluctance, most of the council and remaining nobles supported the foreign king and his army, and sent what aid they could. It was not until Illenans reached Tindrel that she, along with most other city inhabitants, found out that bloodmages, with the backing of the despot, were behind the deaths and disappearances of so many. Sovil's support faltered, but because stability was more important to other councilors, he kept his seat and position. Kedris became a vocal critic, and Lithra followed his lead in helping the Illenans restructure laws and build fragile trust between the commoner and the noble. Lithra took his place in the council when needed, and, once her brother decided to join the royal procession, she became a permanent fixture.

Lithra easily navigates the tempers and calms nerves of those she admires and respects. She takes pride in her diplomacy, as she brings disparate voices to the table and manages compromises.
