Centaurs of Ykglenda

This article is still a WIP!

Basic Information

Anatomy

The body and legs of a horse and the torso, head, and arms of a human.

Genetics and Reproduction

The gestation period for centaurians last thirteen months. Typically, only one foal is born at a time. The birthing of twin foals is not unheard of and usually occurs every twenty-or-so years. Triplets, however, is a rarity and incredibly dangerous on the body of the mother. The High Council has seven documentations of triplets throughout the millennia.

Growth Rate & Stages

Once foals are completely weaned from their mother's milk (which takes approximately 9-11 months), they mature marginally fast, reaching puberty by their fourth year. They're considered mature by their seventh year, though still extremely young by centaurian standards.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Centaurs are omnivores. They hunt game, fish from rivers and lakes, and harvest. Though quasi-nomadic, centaurs are attuned to the natural elements of the Weave, allowing them to manipulate the earth around them. With millennia's of practice, they've fine-tuned this ability to help them grow crops over short periods of time.

Additional Information

Social Structure

  • High Council members
  • Volqaars
  • Mothers
  • Warriors
  • Craftsmen
  • Serf
To note: Centaurian serfs are not typically viewed as slaves in the normal sense. They are rival tribesman of completely destroyed tribes, warriors who fought valiantly, the ever-useful smiths, and mages of great power. While they are forced into a subservient role, they are granted freedom or acceptance into the tribe after participating worthily in enough battles against other rivals.

Facial characteristics

Centaurs, while resembling elves and humans in facial characteristics, are known to have more angular features. Sharper cheekbones and jawlines, more severe expressions.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Spread across three continents, that of Orcosi, Marsea, and Lorasea.   There are roughly 175,000 to 350,000 centaurs on each continent.

Average Intelligence

Centaurs are fiercely intelligent, partially due to the fact that they're innately capable of viewing fragments of the Weave. Which grants them unusual bouts of transcendence.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The five normal senses as well as an extrasensory ability to sense strong emotions.

Civilization and Culture

Major Organizations

Helaaryna of Orcosi - Motherland, place of worship, trade, and business.
  • Relations with Caerdean: Mutually positive, if aloof
  • Relations with Kingsport: Mutually disliked
  • Relations with Lecara: Mutually respected, if aloof
  • Relations with Rezamere: Mutually disliked
Helaaryna of Lorasea -
  • Relations with Valterion: Mutually hated
  • Relations with Kuvagi: Mutually disliked
  • Relations with the QN: Mutually respected, if aloof
  • Relations with Steelwood Motte: Mutually positive
Helaaryna of Marsea -
  • Relations with Mesovia: Mutually respected, if aloof
  • Relations with Emeraldy: Mutually hesitant
  • Relations with Athaneos: Mutually disliked

Common Taboos

  • Allowing anyone, regardless of species, to ride upon a centaur's back is considered taboo.
  • Killing within a Helaaryna is considered obscene and will incur the wrath of council members and devout's alike.
  • The killing of females and foals is highly frowned upon and oft considered an unholy act. Even in tribal warfare, warriors rarely succumb to killing rival tribes women and young. More often than not, women and young are taken into the care of the victorious tribe, and while their males may become serfs, they are accepted wholly.

Historical Figures

Sashara of Orcosi
  • Said to be the originator of the Helaaryna's. Rumored to have traveled between all three continents to layout preparations with an entire entourage at her hooves.
Neryaan of Lorasea
  • Said to have repelled near a thousand assaults upon his tribe. Reports do not say whether they're human or centaurian, but most speak his name in reverence in regards to battle prowess.
Reyzbal of Orcosi
  • Said to be the most famous centaur that has ever lived. Befriended by the last Herald, RoNaan himself, Reyzbal was fiercely loyal to his cause and not only left his tribe, but even brought a few like-minded centaurs to help RoNaan in his fight to save the world. It's rumored that Reyzbal forged all of RoNaan's gear.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Though ostracized by most, centaurians have a tendency to look down upon their elven and human counterparts. Like halflings, they consider themselves free of human intervention and while they respect humans for winning their conquest of the Three Known Lands, their attitude and treatment of them only leaves a sour taste in most centaurian mouths. They're views on elves, however, are even more sour.   Centaurs and elves shared millenniums together before the arrival of humans upon Ykglenda. Their quick acceptance of the foreign invaders and fear of human retribution have led centaurs to believe elves are weak in mind and body. In addition, there is a long-held sense of betrayal by the elves, although no centaurs today were alive during the separation.
