Centaurs of Ykglenda

Centaurs are dotted throughout the landscape, segregated and ostracized by their bipedal counterparts. In times of old, centaur relations with elves and halflings were things of respect. When humans arrived in a blast of world-wide consequence, that respect became doubt and fear of retribution. Slowly and then all at once, centaurs were driven to the far ends of civilized land. In recent millennias, centaurs live in quasi-nomadic tribes which adhere to the rule of a multitude of Councils, made up of their eldest peers and Volqaars, male and female centaurs devoted to higher causes. Trading outside of tribes is not often done, but when it occurs, it's overseen by the High Councils.   Tribe wars are frequent and bloody. Disagreements within a tribe follow the same route. The centaurs are a wild breed, built to fight and make war, however... They were gifted with great mental capacity, one that innately allows them to view fragments of the Weave itself. Some say the war they fight internally gives credence to their wildness, their irrationality, and their bouts of transcendence. Personal affronts are often settled by the blade, but let it be known there are also duels of intelligence.   There are three High Councils, one upon each of the Three Known Lands. Although centaurs are aware of the other High Councils, there are few upon the very few who travel between them. When a human or an elf sees a wayward centaur, it is more than likely an Emissary of the High Council. They cycle through docks, marketplaces, palaces and governments, all foreign, and Helaaryna's, a trio of centaurian holy places as well as High Council consulates.   As you may have guessed, there are three Helaaryna's. One is hidden from most, nestled in the mountaintops of Orcosi. Another resides in an oasis upon Lorasea, infamous for their mage's prowess in the manipulation of sand. The third one rests in the Hills of Marbalea, a great wood and granite structure built between three large hills. Each Halaaryna is built to house all centaurs within their continent, as they are of the belief that it will be their final resting place in the world to come. Violence is forbidden upon entry and is enforced by requiring a show of faith; to be admitted requires you to handover any weapons upon your person or belongings. Weapons will be returned upon exit.   Perhaps in relation to their formidable flavor of war, centaurs are expert craftsmen, chiefly smiths and armorers. Weapon and armor forged by centaurs are highly sought after, jealously guarded, and oft rumored to be enchanted unbreakable. Though the later is false, there is a significant difference in centaurian made objects. However, only they know the secret behind the extra-durable blades and helmets.   Female centaurs run the household, handle trade between tribes, farm and harvest, and holds the decision on who she wishes to mate. Duels over courtship are common and more often than not, the female centaur will reject both males due to their confrontation. Centuarian's mate for life and the concept of choice and decision is held in high regard throughout their society.
Lifespan: Upwards of two hundred years   Common hair colors: Brown, autumn-colored, and shades of platinum blonde to silver   Common eye colors: Brown, green-and-brown, gold, and shades of silver.
Volqaars are said to be holy. Male and females who practice both art and war, glance upon the Weave without harm to their psyche, and harness great magical prowess. They travel between tribes, sticking close for a long while or only a few short days. It is said that Volqaars see time differently, that time flows in a thousand different ways, and has become rather irrelevant to their noticing.   Almost all centuarian Mating's are officiated by a Volqaar   Pronunciation || vole-kwahR
Helaaryna's are motherlands, places of worship, trade, and business. There are only three in the world. They have been in existence for nearly seven millenniums and thus, for all of modern history. They have surely been renovated and rebuilt throughout that time, but never have they moved their location. Due to the religious significance of Helaaryna's, Volqaars frequent the establishment so often that when something occurs of significance, they're oft sent out as Emissaries.   Pronunciation || hel-lah-ree-nuh

I've always liked centaurs, and I like this approach of making them something more human than we usually see. Typically, we get "wise astronomers" or hero trainers, thanks to Greek Myth, and this seems to be a wholly refreshing take on the race. I like it.   Centaurs are a violent breed, it seems, and would likely see many of themselves killed in the frequent tribal warfare, which leaves some questions to answer. How numerous are they? What would a typical tribe look like? What are the demographics of a tribe? What's their gestation period in relation to a human? How many children (foals?) are typically born in a pregnancy?   They mate for life, but are they monogamous/monoandrous? Is there a gender imbalance that triggers the common courtship rituals? If so, what is the cause for this gender imbalance?

Looks interesting! What kind of gear does these centaurs like? And how do they get the materials for that gear? I don't imagine centaurs do to well in mines, for instance. :D   For that matter, what do they eat? Horses are herbivores, but being a centaur does present some challenges to maintaining agriculture. Are they omnivore hunters? You mention farm and harvest, but they are also normadic? How does that play out? Inquiring minds desires to know! :D   Are there different outfits for different tribes, or different ways for them to differentiate fro me each other?

I still have lots of research to do to make sure things are at least semi-accurate, but centaurians, to answer your question, only don armor on their upper halves.   In short, they are elementalists, capable of manipulating the natural world around them. It's how they eat crops as well! I'll link the article in this post once I'm done, it'll go a lot more in depth than I'm capable of rn!   While there aren't necessarily different outfits, there are different ways of donning them, different vibrancy of hues, different cuts and lengths and stitches, mostly dependent upon the personal preference and native resources.   Thank you a ton for your input! Really made me think things through. Anything I haven't answered will be mentioned in the species template to come!

My favorite (some would say irritating) world building question is definitely "So what do they eat?" :D   I'm glad you found it helpful! :D   Another random suggestion: Quotes are great ways to give context and break up the text. Like a quote from a centaur about his day or whatnot.   Keep on WorldEmbering! <3

I like the little tid-bits in here about religion. There's a lot of implied depth, and I'd like to know more. There's clearly a concept of 'holiness' and they have holy sites and holy people and such. I think it could hepl the article a lot if you added a section that expands on this religious aspect. Is it just nature worship, something relating to the Weave, or time, or do they have a god? Ykglenda is their country, presumably, but does it mean anything else?   I suspect that your demonym for the centaurs should be centaurian, not centuarian.   When you say "When humans arrived in a blast of world-wide consequence, that respect became doubt and fear of retribution" what exactly does that mean, did they just appear one day? And if the centaurs are so war-like and well-equipped how were they driven back by the humans? I suppose this might be a question to answer with another article, but 7 millenniums is a long time on a human-time-scale at least, so I'd be interested to know how long it took humanity to develop the skills and technology to fight them. In-fact, roughly what levels of technology are we looking at in this world? It seems like international trade networks have been established, so I'm imagining iron-age or later? Things to consider...   Suggestion: It seems that you want to strike a balance between the 'civilized' and 'barbaric' types. There's clearly some form of organised religion and ruler-ship; and they want to trade with the outside world? But they're viewed from the outside as all being 'barbaric'. I wonder if there's actually any truth to that, or if it's just a derogatory stereotype. If you're going for the angle that the centaurs are more-in-touch-with-nature than humans, then perhaps there is some truth there, and perhaps there are pockets of their culture that have regressed to the beasts that humans seems to be categorising them as?

Thanks for pointing out my typo! I didn't even realize. >_<"   "Did they just appear one day?" Short answer: yup! Humanity is a foreign blight upon the lands of Ykglenda and I hope to write out the tale in an article here soon!   I'm currently creating a species template for centaurs and a lot of your questions will be answered there (I'll link it once I'm done!) but I'll take your suggestion about religion and expand upon it in this article! Thank you, you've given me a lot to think about.

I dig the Centaur theme, but a couple of things I'd like to suggest. One would be to add some pictures to help break up the text. The combo of heavy text body and sidebar make it a little hard to focus.   When there are that many words together the brain tends to go to mush.   The second thing is your font size. It feels a bit small for the page and combined with the all text layout it makes for a rough ride.   Give some of your sections their own room to breathe. Three Councils can be under its own header for instance. I think perhaps you would have better off with the Species template. Any reason you went with generic?

Thank you for your suggestions-- I've taken them to heart and am currently forging my way through a centaurian species template. To answer your question though, I think I just wanted to write, quickily at that, and sometimes all the little different sections and my need to make things...pretty... get in the way of that.   I've been hesitant to use pictures because I usually can't find the artist who drew them, but I'll try a little harder this time around! And again, thank you!
