Session 4 - 2023-03-17
General Summary
The adventurers find themselves high in the mountains on the road to Val Doheim. Vilnius has reported that trees block the road ahead. Sensing the possibility of danger, the bulk of the group moves forward ahead of the wagon in order to investigate. The group spreads out to investigate the fallen trees, and determines that this may be a deliberate act to block the path. Zylfinah surprises the group by turning into a large inky-black bear, and together with Phlox Carroway and Eudaimonia Waring, they begin to clear the road. Frocias Handley brings the wagon up, and arrows sail over his head to impact the wagon as a group of goblins break cover of the trees on the ridges to the North and South of the road, whilst a large bugbear comes out of the trees to the East. Frocias notices another goblin trying to approach stealthily from behind the wagon.
The goblins approaching from the South begin taking shots at Phlox, while the ones from the North try to get to the wagon to raid it. Vilnius engages the bugbear near the road, and Zylfinah moves to support him. Before he falls, the bugbear blows a long note on a horn that had been strapped to his belt, and the group surmises that reinforcements are imminent. Eudaimonia and Frocias work hard to cover the wagon, throwing a variety of spells as Frocias's servant hovers overhead doing likewise.
On the South side of the road, another bugbear and two more goblins emerge. The bugbear engages with Phlox while the goblins dash to support the sole remaining goblin from the original group in raiding the wagon. Frocias sees them trying unsuccessfully to take a crate from the wagon and decides to help them out, handing a far-too-heavy crate to one of the small creatures. To prevent him being crushed under its weight, all three goblins begin trying to support the crate and make off with it, making them compelling targets for Zylfinah, Vilnius and Frocias to dispatch. The second bugbear uses this as cover to grab a crate from the cart and try to get away, but a well placed shot from Vilnius brings him down.
The party gathers the crates, and Zylfinah restores Phlox to consciousness using Goodberries. Frocias points out that with his mending cantrip, he could repair the crates that have been slightly damaged, which could mean that they could further "damage" the crates first, to discover their contents. Several party members caution against this, and Frocias settles for trying to use what damage has already been done to look inside the crates. He sees a crate filled with small objects, each one colored in reds and purples, pinks, greens and yellows with a range of shapes. Phlox begins to suspect that the team is transporting crates filled with gems.
