Roman Paganism

Roman paganism is near extinct due to the coming of the Roman Catholic Church. Before this, the Romans believes in a polytheistic form of religion, believing in many gods/goddesses, influenced by the Greek Hellenic religion. Etruscan belief influenced the religion too.   Many common elements are found in the remaining practices. They include the use of augury to determine omens, mystery cults (where the cult of a god inducted members in / no talking about it to outsiders), practical and contractual obligations to their beliefs (giving to the gods and they will give back), ancestor worship (so traditions carry on).   Every house has personal shrine where prayers and libations can be given to the ancestors for private worship, and neighbourhood shrines and groves such as natural springs & groves exist for public worship. Religion depended on knowledge and the correct practice of prayer, ritual, and sacrifice, not on faith or dogma. Some public rituals could be conducted only by women, and women formed what is perhaps Rome's most famous priesthood, the state-supported Vestals, who tended Rome's sacred hearth for centuries.
