Orcs Species in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Orcs

Orcs are savage beings with strong muscly physiques, greenish brown skin, sharp teeth (especially the canine teeth), and an exceptionally violent disposition. They are the children of a deified being called Gruumsh, who lost a battle against the Celtic gods of the British Celts, loosing an eye in the process. They were driven underground, and into wastelands where nothing was thought of them for centuries. There they bred, started worshipping Gruumsh, and started to practice martial skills in-depth. They eventually learned to carry out raids against the human populations of Britain, and now further afield when they found that the world was far larger than they thought.   Each Orc is built for war, and their tribes are as much war-parties than just a loosely knit tribe. They have a savage temperament, and everything used by them is functional, but not made to the high standards of other species. A tribe is made up primarily of warriors of different kinds, led by the War Chief (some times called a Warboss), with an Eye of Gruumsh (a priest who removes an eye in honour of Gruumsh, and receives divine power through this act), and other specialists. The War Chief constantly has to fight to keep his or her position, as rivals constantly battle to take over. As a species who revolves round warfare, this is a constant problem, and prevents cohesion between the tribes, who will look to conquer other tribes to add their numbers to their own.   One thing that frightens a War Chief more is the birth of an Orog. Each War Chief believes an Orog will take over the tribe when they reach adulthood. This couldn't be farther from the truth. Orogs are born when the tribe gets large enough and the stresses of such number requires a larger stronger type of Orc to be born to keep the rest in line, and a smart War Chief will keep a few Orogs around for this purpose, even making a few as a form of 'Noble', or as bodyguards for himself. On the battlefields they act as shock troops, and make sure the Orcs around them keep in line with traditional Orc ways.   Orcs bred quickly and often, to keep numbers up, and because Gruumsh expects them to. This extends to breeding with other species too, and they view it as a necessary means to increase numbers further. Half-Orcs are created this way, and the Orcs view them as close relations. Not so much as purebloods but close enough all the same.   According to legend, Gruumsh was not the first Orc god to exist. The legend states that the first Orcs were called Orks, and worshipped twin gods called Gork and Mork. They had similar beliefs, that the former was Brutal & Kunnin', while the latter was Kunnin' & Brutal. Both are rumoured to still exist somewhere in the Far Realms, and rarely does anyone find any Orc worshipping them.
