Kobolds Species in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Kobolds

Kobolds are small humanoids, who have the appearance of small bipedal lizards or dragons. They are usually reddish in colour, though other colours are noted on occasion. Each of them are weak physically but they are numerous. Both the Kobolds, and the Gnomes hate each other, and will attack on sight. This comes from the Gnomes requesting help from the god Lugh, who trapped the Kobold god in the middle of a maze, preventing it finding its way out.   The Kobolds make use of few clothes, and will use some armour where possible. They prefer to live in dark warrens away from more powerful creatures, and many can also be found in the service of dragons, especially ones of the same colour as themselves. In their warrens the most powerful, whether the strongest or the magically inclined, lead them. The warrens are usually too small for larger beings to enter and navigate. The Kobolds will use any tunnels or structures already in place to save time. They are skilled at setting traps and clearing out junk in an area, and surprisingly good at some building work. Sometimes a settlement will hire Kobolds to work on the sewerage system and let the Kobolds live there. By doing so, creatures like rats are kept under control, the sewers are maintained, and enemies are caught in Kobold traps.   In many cases though, the Kobolds are a pest, and they regularly steal to survive. This can lead to a purge of them, and they are either forced out, or killed. The Kobolds can easily replace their numbers, and they procreate by laying eggs. If any eggs are laid in an area where the rest of them are killed or driven off, there could easily be a number of them again a short while later, especially in cases of regular food sources.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Similar to dragons in the sense they have a possible common ancestor. They usually have no breath weapon and very few have wings.

Genetics and Reproduction

Kobolds reproduce by having male & female members of their species. They are hard to tell apart though, and the females lays eggs when they are impregnated by males.

Growth Rate & Stages

Kobolds grow quickly reaching maturity far quicker than an average human or humanoid. When they are hatchlings they live off insects, small mammals & birds until they get to adolescence after a few short years, after that, they reach adulthood quickly too.

Ecology and Habitats

They prefer caves, sewers, abandoned building, and other such regions that can be easily set up with traps. They can easily keep down the numbers of vermin living in an area by eating them. Some, are not above capturing & eating larger creatures, especially in the employ of a dragon, stopping any would be dragon slayers from killing their masters.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Purely carnivorous, Kobolds regularly catch prey species in traps (some very complicated), and hunt down creatures too. They prefer warmer climates or living space, hoarding all manner of trinkets. They will change patterns when employed by a dragon and will act as it's agents when this presents itself. They actively guard the dragon's lair and treasure hoard, as well as adding to it.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Found throughout the world, Kobolds are found in the greatest numbers in the Far East along with other dragonkin & dragons. There is the odd established colonies in Europe and the Middle East, with Africa having a few & not in the same numbers as other countries.

Average Intelligence

Kobolds are quite intelligent, and they have the ability to hunt, hide, and build traps in their warrens to protect themselves when their numbers are insufficient or their enemies too powerful.

Civilization and Culture

Average Technological Level

Kobolds have quite a sharp mind for all their size & weaknesses. They are one of the pre-eminent trap builders in the world, knowing how to lay plenty of basic, yet effective traps better than most. They can craft basic arms & armour, equipment to some degree and some clothing depending on their needs and resources. When they take up residence in a dragon lair, or natural caverns they quickly & effectively burrow out their own network of tunnels as well as mining needed resources too if there is any present. They sometimes raise livestock to eat if they can be bothered or if any is available locally. Some are employed by towns and cities as rat-catchers or similar and/or for maintaining the sewer systems. A few can be trained easily to maintain hidden passageways in or under buildings, and a few are also willing to act as sappers for larger creatures due to their tunnelling knowledge.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

They normally pick up the common languages in a given region fairly quickly, and also speak Draconic naturally.

History

Kobolds appeared well after the dragons arrived on Earth. Somewhere in what is now the Far East the Kobolds were born from corrupted dragon eggs, and have how spread far & wide. They view dragons as their ancestors, worshipping them as much as their original god. They do not know exactly where the god is or what it's name in, as Lugh the god that gnomes worship, fooled the Kobold god into entering a maze that he could not escape.   Over the millennia that followed, the Kobolds split into larger & larger numbers, usually splitting further into different tribes & clans depending on mentality, the whims of their leaders, and what skin/scale colour they are. They quickly learned that many races didn't like them due to their disruptive nature, with a few societies tolerating them at best. They proved their worth in trap building, and making basic clothing & armour, weapons, and spellcasting. This allowed them to defend themselves when needed.   In many cases, when a tribe or clan finds a dragon of the same colour as themselves, they will settle in & around it's lair. The dragon usually welcomes them, seeing them almost as expendable slaves, and a source of food if need be. From an early period in their history they learned it's best when led by a dragon, especially some of the older dragons.   They hate the Gnomes from ancient history, as well as Dragonborn & Draconians. Out of the two, the former is seen as being favoured by the dragons, and the latter as abominations created by magic.   Three theories exist as to their initial creation. The first is that their god was envious of the power of dragons and created them in the image of these towering monsters after striking up a deal with Bahamut & Tiamat that he would create a race of servants for them using eggs of some of their children to birth them. The second is that they were created by magic similar to what was used to create the Draconians, yet went awry and created a brand new race. The third is that they evolved naturally from dragon eggs over time. The Kobolds prefer the first obviously, though the rest of the world postulates it likely one of the other two means they came about.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

All Kobolds have major issues with Gnomes and will happily dress down, or even kill, a Gnome on sight if presented with the chance to do so. This is due to their previous issues.   They will try to get themselves set up with a dragon if they can as they feel a strong kinship with these beings.   All other aces have a tendency of looking down on them, and most think of them as a nuisance more than anything. Most will either ignore them, or if there is too many will to try to curtail or dive them off.
