Kieran Byrnes Character in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Kieran Byrnes

Kieran Byrnes is a Celtic warrior, and an outcast from his tribe. Growing up he trained in using the weapons of his people, who travelled through the Black Forest and surrounding regions. Constantly outnumbered, they teamed up with the local Wood Elf community that lives deep in the Black Forest.   After reaching adulthood, Kieran was dispatched with other warriors to help harass the Saxons in the north of the forest. During this time the Saxons had disturbed a village of Pixies who were fleeing from them. Unfortunately, Kieran had not followed tradition, and thinking the Pixies were trying to attack him & his tribe, attacked and killed one. The rest of the warriors were horrified at what he had done, and knew they would be cursed for such an action. Each knew that the old crone deep in the forest known as Aunty Grimly had Fey blood in her, and to attack a Fey of any kind was an anathema to both their own beliefs and possibly to the Fey themselves. Also, Grimly may come calling looking as to what had happened.   So, at the next full moon, Kieran was banished, and sent to the ruined hut in the deep forest where Aunty Grimly frequented. Once here, she grinned when she seen the young warrior, knowing what he had done. She decided to leave the rest of the tribe alone, knowing that soon enough she could cause even more carnage amongst them & others. Taking Kieran to the cave below, Grimly worked through the night and following day, till the full moon of the following night was at it's zenith.   After finishing, Kieran was not as he used to be. Cursed to be enslaved by Aunty Grimly until the day he dies, he now acts as her protector, eyes & ears, and a terror to be let loose when she calls his name in the dark. Also, every full moon he is reminded of his curse by the painful transformation he goes through knowing the only way he can be stopped and atoned is by having three pixies bless him during a full moon, and them to survive while he hears the blessing, by killing him, or by killing Aunty Grimly. For those are the only way the curse of lycanthropy can be stopped.   Until then, he must regularly take the form of a wolf, and hunt with packs of lesser wolves in the Black Forest.
