Firbolg Species in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Firbolg

The Firbolgs are descended of the original inhabitants of Hibernia. They are larger and quite bulky compared to many other species. Classed as unsophisticated, and pushed by the Celts coming into Hibernia, the Firbolgs moved into regions that the newcomers didn't want to settle. There they came closer to the lands, and only appear when it is necessary to maintain balance in nature. Each has close ties to the land, and some maintain that they became the first druids in the country. Certainly many other druids have been taught by the Firbolgs, who also seem to have close connections to the Fey.   Exactly who they were originally, nobody knows, but their connection extends back to earliest times in Hibernia, and rumours about that the land looks to them for balance, and some of the greatest folk heroes may have a bit of Firbolg blood in them. They are secretive, and a few of them that are met appear only to drive off others from hurting nature, and are rarely seen as adventurers. When they appear as the latter, they seem to be on some mission at the behest of their tribal elders. Even rarer is the Firbolg thrown out of their society for some heinous crime like murder.   Firbolg live in small communities hidden away in remote regions, and deep forests. Each is skilled in some form of magic, usually types associated with nature & life. It seems they are aware of Forest Gnomes & Wood Elves that live in the same forests as they do, and with the Fey that do as well. The Firbolg will quite willingly allow these knowledge of their existence, and only if they prove to be peaceful. Treants and a major ally of the Firbolg, and both act to scare off other creatures that could potentially cause harm to the forests.   Recently, a few Firbolgs have made their way to the rest of the British Isles, and north western Europe, mainly to build up closer links with the druids that still remain in many of these regions. What has been gleaned is the fear that the Firbolg have of changes happening that they fear will threaten their precious habitats.
