Celtic Warriors Military Formation in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Celtic Warriors

Celtic warriors are usually infantry, and split into two general groups. The first is the nobility, who has access to longswords, metal helmets, some chainmail & studded leather, and good training. They are effectively the elites of Celtic warriors.   The second is the basic troops made up of the local peoples recruited by the nobles. They are lightly armoured, sometimes with nothing more than a shield. A few have access to old swords. They are primarily armed with spears and/or axes, and shield. A few might have access to padded or leather armour. They fight either as a mass of individuals or something similar to a Roman phalanx. This depends on their experience and what foes they regularly meet. A shield wall is possible with them, and they look for any chance to intimidate the enemy before attacking. The units are armed with a tall war horn with a bronze boar's head attached. The sound is off putting for enemy troops and adds to the intimidation tactics.
