Angles, Jutes, Friesians Ethnicity in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Angles, Jutes, Friesians

The Angles, Jutes, and Friesians are Germanic tribes from the north of Europe. Each of them was part of the migration from this region, with the Saxons to southern & eastern Britain after the fall of the Roman Empire. The Jutes were originally from what is now northern Denmark,, the Angles were from southern Denmark, and the Friesians are from what is the Netherlands. All three can still be found to a degree in their original homelands, though the Friesians are the only peoples still with large enough numbers in the Netherlands.   The Angles took over the central eastern part of Britain right up to near Lothian in Alba, and was the largest of all the migrating groups coming here. The Jutes had a couple of small holdings in the southeast, but have been swallowed up by both the Angle and Saxon regions. The Friesians settled in the other peoples regions, and seemed to have accepted the ruling classes of the other Germanic peoples.   Each has their own Germanic languages with slight changes in spelling & pronunciation. They worshipped the same gods originally with, again, though have now primarily converted to Christianity, at least the basics. Much paganism is still found throughout the locals, with the nobility paying the most lip service to the new religion. The Angles are probably the most powerful of the peoples here, having control of Mercia, East Anglia, and Northumbria. They also have had pacts, treaties, and marriages between themselves and the Saxons. This still hasn't stopped open warfare between the two. Also, with the Celtic & Romano-Celtic peoples in many of their regions, and beyond their borders, violence still breaks out between the different peoples. The Mercian branch is presently the dominant Angle group, and this period is known as the Mercian Supremacy. Coenwolf of Mercia is the present king, being from December 796. His name is also spelled Cenwulf, Kenulf, or Kenwulph.
