Barbarian

The border between civilization and the wilderness is a place of natural friction. Barbarians are the manifestation of this friction in the flesh. They are untamed, normally unlettered, and care not for the niceties of urban life. Proud and seldom unarmed, the way of the barbarian is the natural path for the deadliest warriors of the harsh nations bordering the wilds. They are less common in the core lands of Mitteland than they are in Getica, the northern principalities in the shadow of the Boreal mountains, and the chaotic lands around the Ostsea.
Barbarians proliferate too on the Thulean Frontier. Some of them make a compromise with the farmers and aristocrats who would civilize Thule. The wealth, culture, and pleasures of the town are attractive, and many barbarians find them better enjoyed than plundered. Others reject entirely the settlements of the Mittelanders, using them as sources of pillage and putting themselves at odds with the forces of law and order. Whichever way they go, barbarians who accumulate great power and wealth attract followers of like mind, and even if they would privately prefer not too they often find themselves inevitably in conflict with the lords and governors of settled lands.
