Lordis

A gender-neutral form of address for nobility used in the Demon Realm.

Qualifications

Either inherited from a parent or awarded to accompany a high status position/profession.

Appointment

Non-hereditary appointments must be approved by the Demon King, otherwise the inheritance is automatic.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

The Demon King can dismiss others from this rank at their discretion, but usually will not without good reason so as not to cause a rift with other lordi.

History

Previously, "lordi" simply referred to the top-ranking attendants and advisors of any demon king. After the formation of the United Demon Realm, however, many former kings were demoted to the rank of lordis. As such, rather than creating entirely new ranks, demons developed a hierarchy of lordi:  

• Petty
• Minor
• Lesser
• Middling
• Major
• Greater

This system is often confusing not only to other species but also to demons not of noble rank. There are no particular styles of dress or ornamentation that distinguish these ranks from each other, as they were developed before major increases in textiles and crafting occurred. Most demon nobles simply learn and remember each others' ranks, or assume someone's rank based on their confidence in social interactions with other lordi. 
For example, as a Petty Lordis is the lowest in noble status, they tend to be more differential to their peers so as not to cause offense - while a Greater Lordis is more likely to throw their eight around since only the Demon King outranks them.
