Valbarra

Valbarra is so named after the ancient empire that first dominated the continent. Little remains of them but the name - other civilizations have risen and fallen over their ashes. At some point, contact was lost with the old world, and while the people of Valbarra have always known of the existence of the other half of the world, they do not communicate. References to the old world as a place of evil and danger are told to frighten children, although most adults don’t believe the stories. Valbarra knows the same religions as the rest of the world. There has been no schism since the two halves of the world lost touch, a very long time for the Terrene and the Empyrean. Magic is relatively rare on Valbarra. A previous empire fell in a clash of sorcery, leading to many magic users having the abilities burned from them. The number of magic users has never truly recovered. Alongside this, technology has increased well beyond the levels in the old world. Gunpowder has recently been refined, and basic firearms are starting to appear. Valbarra is the most settled continent, but it is by no means completely conquered. Ruins from previous civilizations, wild magic pockets, and old growth forests cover a reasonable amount of land. The people of Valbarra are limited to elves (and half-elves), humans, dwarves, gnomes, hobgoblins, and some very few halflings. With no connection to the underdark, none of those subraces have persisted on the continent. The only halfling groups that remain are stouts, but otherwise all other variants exist.
