Church of Adalci

Are you serious? This is really the next case? Okay.

I've been briefed on the facts of the case, and it is clear that the plaintiff did not understand what he was agreeing to when he called for this trial. It is also clear that it is Adalci's wisdom that this case fall to me.

Mister, Parry, is it? You have called this trial to have your property returned. Said property being an Orc, two Humans, a Dwarf and an Elf. Since you filed the case, I see no reason to waste any more time - I find you guilty of trafficking in slaves. You are fined everything in your possession, 10% of which will go to Adalci, the rest to be split up among your former slaves.

In addition, you have a choice - you will be sentenced to Keson's Deep Prison until you have been deemed rehabilitated, or you can choose the geas. The geas in this case would be to return to your homeland and dedicate all of your current and future earnings, less enough to live a meager existence and tithe to your Deity, to freeing as many slaves as possible. I'm going to give you a night to think about it, and we will convene to hear your decision tomorrow.

Adjourned.

— Justice Liadon of Adalci
Adalci Court, Corellum, 823 Af.

Structure

Presiding Bishop - elected by the other bishops to chair meetings and direct resources. The presiding bishop is chosen annually, although the same bishop is often retained. The presiding bishop is generally, but not always, the bishop of Uboram.

Bishop - All 20th level clerics of Adalci are automatically Bishops, although they do not necessarily all take their place on the council. Bishops are the leaders of the church in an area, and are mostly autonomous.

Dean - Deans are administrators working for the various bishops. They are the middle management of the church, coordinating the various churches in the bishop’s area, ensuring that tithes are taken and alms dispersed, and otherwise maintaining the church in general.

Priest - the priest is the leader of a specific church. They lead rituals and worship services and provide counseling to members. They are often called on to adjudicate disputes. Some priests have basic cleric powers, and some priests are eventually called on by Adalci to become clerics.

Deacon - assistants to priests. Sometimes a deacon will run a small church, although this is almost always when the full fledged priest has passed, and the deacon steps in until a dean can come to anoint them as a priest.

Parochial vicars - the vicars are wandering priests, bringing the word of Adalci to the world. Most clerics are technically vicars, although most vicars are not clerics. Often have a number of villages that they cycle through, where they conduct rituals and adjudicate disputes.

Culture

While there is some slight tension between those who emphasize Justice against those who emphasize Mercy, the members of the Church are generally aligned in purpose. Members work well together, and help fellow members almost without question. They have a clear sense of right and wrong, and will not participate in anything they consider to be wrong.

This can sometimes bring them into conflict with other churches. Some other groups believe that they are too judgemental, and resent that the Adalcians try to hold everyone else to their standards.

Public Agenda

The ultimate goal of the Church is to eradicate evil, crime, and war. The Church can always be called upon to fight an obvious evil, such as the undead. They are trusted by many to act as a court system, although they follow Adalci's laws rather than the laws of the land they are in. They are willing to go to war to enforce these rulings if necessary.

Assets

Most of the wealth of the Church is in the buildings. Churches are made from local materials, and can look quite different. They all share a focus on form over function. The Church recognizes that art and beauty are a form of good, and so there is artwork in Aldacian buildings. But most of the income from tithing is spent on welfare and funding the Justice system.
