Nedj ore is a metal that is slightly radioactive and has been altered by magic, though it has no magical energy. Its only known use is in the creation of Newsteel, which is a complicated process kept secret by the Strat metalworkers who know it.

In its purest form, Nedj ore is a metal with an unusual red hue. It can be faintly seen in total darkness by human eyes, and more light sensitive species can see it clearly. It is much harder than iron or steel, but more brittle than either.

Prolonged exposure to pure Nedj ore and most of its alloys is harmful to most biological and robotic beings, so its unique hue cannot be exploited in that way. The singular use for Nedj ore is in the creation of Strat Newsteel. Newsteel is a metal with superior hardness and durability and enough flexibility to withstand tremendous forces. Strat prize it to make traditional blades, which are strong enough to hold a razor edge after years of use. They also make plates of armor if they have sufficient supply. The process by which Newsteel is made is a secret kept by Strat metalworkers. It is long and laborious, and any mistake can ruin the material. Nedj ore must be combined with manganese, nickel, chromium, and traces of other elements in a slow process of its own before it can be slowly alloyed with iron and carbon.

Geology & Geography

Nedj ore can only be found in rare deposits scattered across the planet. It tends to be very deep underground, making it difficult to locate, even with a quadcorder.

Origin & Source

Nedj ore was first discovered by the Strat clan Fiegollo, and Newsteel was invented by Fiegollo Nedj. The reason the clan named the ore after Nedj instead of giving it the clan name is unknown, though some speculate that they believed the other clans would disapprove.

Life & Expiration

Despite being slightly radioactive, Nedj ore has no half life. The magic that affected it causes it to regenerate as quickly as it decays, however the amount of radiation is insufficient to use as a power source or anything else.
