The Immolation
The Immolation is a year of great importance to the Dragonborn of Zir. This is the year 0 on the Ziranthian Calendar. On this day, the Dragonborn tribes united, and were emancipated from Yuan-ti slavery by the Great Gold Dragon, Brethezriass, whose fiery breath created the Desert of Zir.
In ancient times, the Dragonborn tribes were seperated by colour, and lived as nomads in the Eastern Lands.
Also in the Eastern Lands were the more powerful and more established Yuan-ti Empire. The Yuan-ti God-Empress Seshassah wanted to ascend to divine status, and sought to do so by building the greatest empire in the world on the backs of Dragonborn slaves.
The tribes were enslaved, all but the Gold Tribe, who resisted by fleeing into the western mountain range, where they sought the help of an Ancient Gold Dragon called Brethezraiss, whom they worshiped as a god. They spent years on the banks of the sacred Lake Memnor, conversing with Brethezriass in their dreams, and pleading with him to save their Dragonborn brethren. But Brethezriass had taken a vow of solitude, and did not wish to be disturbed.
Meanwhile, the Dragonborn slaves were being worked to death under the tyrannical rule of the God-Empress. They built great tombs and monuments. Fearing a rebellion, the Yuan-ti subjected their slaves to cruel and reckless mutilation that disabled their breath weapons permanently, a procedure that was often performed on newborn hatchlings. This was considered the cruelest form of punishment to the Dragonborn, who saw their breath as their most important link to their proud draconic ancestry.
The Gold Tribe knew of these mutilations, and ventured into the slums of the Yuan-ti Empire to liberate a young, mutilated hatchling. They believed that, showing these young slaves to Brethezriass would convince him to show himself and help liberate the Dragonborn.
Their plan was successful. Brethezriass was overcome with empathy for the voiceless, breathless hatchling. We was filled with blinding rage, and emerged from his isolation for the first time in centuries. He flew at once to the very heart of the Yuan-ti Empire, and rained down a furious inferno so hot that it melted the very stone that comprised the Yuan-ti monuments and tombs. The God-Empress was defeated that very same day.
Blinded by rage, Brethezriass flew across the lands, burning every Yuan-ti settlement he could find. His fiery breath, laced with powerful draconic magic and primordial rage, was so fierce that it changed the very climate of the already semi-arid lands, turning them into the inhospitable desert.
