A gelider or cold chest is a bibelot fairly common in the more advanced regions of the Sora. In its simplest form, the gelider is a small wooden box with an embedded shard of demi-elemental ice. A gelider of this form can maintain its insides about 10C lower than the surrounding temperature. These are the cheapest and most commonly found geliders, mostly used in the cellars of lower class houses to store meat, milk, and other perishable food for longer. More expensive and rarer geliders incorporate an insulator such as a wool lining, metal walls, a larger piece of ice, more interior space, or some combination. The largest, most expensive geliders are the size of entire rooms and can keep large amounts of goods chilled to below-freezing temperatures.
Cheaper geliders can last up to a decade before the ice shard decomposes into its constituent elements. More expensive ones last longer, roughly in proportion to how large their ice shard is. Magical bindings can improve the life of the gelider, though this is often too expensive for the more common, smaller geliders.
