Vaicatt Settlement in The Somer Plate | World Anvil

Vaicatt (VaykaT)

Vaicatt is a small village found among the petrified trees of the Gray Woods. It's an old village, even older than the woods are, though few of the buildings built before the woods were petrified still remain.

Guilds and Factions

There are not any guilds per say, in Vaicatt, but there are groups somewhat similar. The three most prominent factions within the village is the fire crafters, the fire eaters, and the rangers. These three groups have quite the power in the village, and the respect of everyone.   The fire crafters are those that perform a craft that sees completion in fire, such as potters, smiths, and glass blowers. They don't usually sell their crafts to those outside the woods, though there have been rare occasions when their merchandise has been seen in the outside world.   The fire eaters are the members of the clergy. They care for the trees, and listen for the whispers in the singing from the stone trees with their mallets.   The rangers are the warriors scouring the peremiters for intruders and thieves.

History

Seven centuries ago, well before the petrification, the first people settled where Vaicatt would one day lay. This was a few families tired of city life, that decided to seek a different life in the midst of the wilderness. Most would pick up a simple trade, and everyone helped each other, seeing no need for coin. More people of the sort would join them as rumour of their little community spread.   After the petrification of the woods, many people left the community, but those that stayed adapted. They found that the trees were, though stone through and through, a very effective material for keeping fires going for long times. As a result, it wasn't uncommon for inhabitants to pick up a craft that closely involved fire. This is something that they try to keep as secret as possible, and have resulted in many people guarding the peremiters. It's not uncommon for people to disappear in the area surrounding the Gray Woods, though the outsiders assume that the forest's inhabitants are using those vanished as sacrifices or food. Nobody who has dared to search for those that have gone missing has returned, and people have decided to leave the forest be. The inhabitants does not eat those they capture, but they do occassionally sacrifice them, if somebody is unlucky enough to be caught during the great feasts.
