The Demi-Fae Reflecting Pool

Summary

An Outworlder man, often named Ty or Rust, arrives to Moon Lake after being jumped by bandits. The man stumbles across the belongings of a Demi-Fae, who is currently bathing in the water, on the shoreline. Ty contemplates his choices: he could take the bag and run, hoping it has supplies to keep him alive through the Forest; or he could ask the Demi-Fae for help.

The man doesn't have much of a choice, as he is soon discovered by the Demi-Fae. She introduces herself as Mayori, and offers a deal with Ty. This deal is often her protection for some of her supplies so that Ty can get back on his feet once they leave the Forest. Ty agrees, as he knows that he probably can't survive on his own.

Mayori details her plan more; it requires Ty to look into Moon Lake. Ty thinks that this'll be an easy task for him, but Mayori cautions that the Reflection the lake gives may be unsavory.[/in[
At this point in the myth, two endings are common: Ty survives the Reflection, or he doesn't.

Ty survives the Reflection. This version ends with Ty looking at the Reflecting Pool at his own Reflection. Mayori asks him what he sees, and he says that he sees a sad failure of a man, that he sees a man who will never accomplish his goals. Ty knows that this Reflection is how he appears now, and that he can change his future. He tears his eyes away from the pool's surface, and asks Mayori again for her assistance. Mayori seems slightly angry, but she keeps her end of the deal, and helps Ty out of the forest.

Ty does not survive the Reflection. This version ends with Ty looking at the Reflecting Pool and being face-to-face with a terrible, indescribable beast, often nicknamed "the Terror". The Terror reaches up out of the pool to grab Ty, and drags the Outworlder deep into the pool.

Historical Basis

Records of Ty and Mayori's existence is hard to come by. They had lived long before record of this story had ever been made, and the many variations tell us that this had been an oral story before written record.

There have been a few references in passing to Outworlder men who share an appearance with Ty, such as a diary where the writer complains about a story one of their grandparents told of a friend. However, record of Mayori seems to not exist, so there are debates of if this was even her real name or if she really existed.

On the subject of Reflections, no one has seemed to find a successful way to use Moon Lake in such a way. All reference to such usage usually involves being under the influence of magic or a magical substance, or there being a magical being nearby. If a spell or magic is involved, it is likely still possible to do today if one were able to find such spell or magic.

Cultural Reception

The general responses have been newfound fear of Moon Lake, and the lesson that you should act as how you would like to be acted against - in a way, that you can face yourself in a mirror and say that you are a good person.
