The Tekar Winter Festival

Every winter in Shindus, people come together to celebrate the original founding of their nation and the blessings of the Pentide that allowed them to thrive. It is celebrated in winter to commemorate the hardships overcome by the first settlers and the Five Heroes in their first winter in the valley. Festivities begin with a week long fast, in which people only eat a small amount of plain Brittle Berry flour each evening, just as the first settlers were forced to ration and scavenge to survive. That week is then followed by a week long festival made up of feasts and revelry, prominently featuring dishes centered on Brittle Berries. Brittle Berries are such a key part of the festivities in part because they are generally the only food that is plentiful in the winter months, but also to represent the first miracle of Kikerion.    The dishes served at the winter festivals are varied and constantly changing, particularly in wealthier communities. Pastries made from a Brittle Berry dough are staples of the celebration in poorer communities and come stuffed with fermented fruits, vegetables, or aged meats. Rich Brittle Berry porridge is also common in poorer communities, served with similarly preserved foods that give variety and are still available in the winter months. In wealthier communities, there will typically be more of a focus on rarer ingredients, but Brittle Berries always feature prominently. For instance, you may see whole roast Batsing (a large quadruped animal kept as livestock) stuffed with a mixture of spices, Brittle Berries, and other assorted vegetables or you may see cuts of Tinde (a smaller bipedal animal kept as livestock) smothered in rich sauces and wrapped in a Brittle Berry dough.   Although this festival is celebrated all over the nation, the largest and most raucous celebration is in the city of Tekar (the largest city in Shindus outside of the capital). It attracts people from all over the continent and is famous for its debauchery.
