Shindus Valley Cave Network
Beneath the Shindus valley there is a vast and complex cave system that is still very poorly understood by the people living above them. There have been nearly 100 different entrances discovered across the valley, some of which have been found to connect to each other. Most of the entrances are about 10 feet wide and continue on with that size for long distances. Many tunnels have been mapped out within about half of a mile of most entrances, but almost nobody has gone beyond that and returned alive. Reports from those that have gone deep into the caves talk about nightmarish creatures that are pale and withered attacking them and forcing them back out of the caves. There have also been a few unique caverns discovered that contain wonders unseen in the world above, such as a cavern filled entirely with vibrant mushrooms of all different forms and a cavern that appears to have a lush rain forest growing within it and natural sunlight streaming in from an open ceiling, although no such hole has been found above ground that would make sense as a source of light and it was lit even in the middle of the night.
Even without entering the caves, they exert a perilous influence on the region. Groups of monsters, similar to those described by spelunkers, are known to appear from the many cave entrances at night and raid rural towns before disappearing back into their holes. Although the caves have long been avoided because of their danger, there has been an initiative lead by Liruka Seizhang, the 19th representative of Bamalion, to further chart the caves and study the odd phenomena that appear within them.
The caves themselves have an almost mythic reputation around them. According to the old legends about the Five Heroes, the first settlers to the Shindus valley fought with the valley's original inhabitants, forcing them off of the surface and into the caves below.
