Wofgwu al Zhakhā

The pirates that call them selves the Wofgwu al Zhakhā are the remains of the great fleet from the Great Migration of the Dānāofari in the year 212 (996 A.S). They would raid across the northern coast of Saloren before heading across the great ocean to the mainland to raid, trade and fight as mercenaries the the highest bidder.

Organisation

Leadership

The leadership of the Wofgwu al Zhakhā consist of 4 people, 2 men and 2 women, all being married to one another. The idea behind this is that the men will be able to govern the martial side to their society and the women look after the more civil aspect and by being all so close they will be able to better understand all aspects of life at sea. Each person in this leadership class is able to choose 2 advisors to aid them and together the 12 people manage the vast fleet of ships and their people, organising rations, weaponry and pay for all.

The Fleet

The vast fleet of around 400 vessels consist of shallow keeled hulls, with fabrics being pitched over the open deck to keep the weather out for eating, sleeping and rowing. Each ship has a unique set of textiles and fabrics that are traditionally captured in raids and are used to show their sailors proficiency in combat, with more valuable covers giving a ships crew more respect. Vessels can hold upwards of 40 people, consisting of men, women and children, many children are born at sea.

Life at Sea

Men man the oars, defend and fight for the ships, collect food and fish, women cook and look after the children. Children are taught the ways of ship sailing and combat from a young age and many of the young men are extremely skilled at combat, easily able to take on 3 armed men at once and come out on top. Women are taught the basics of combat so they can serve as a last line of reserve, with the more skilled ones going on to join the men in battle. The majority are taken under the tutelage of their mother by the age of 7 and taught how to cook and look after a family, and both sexes are normally married off by the age of 16. Inter-ship marriages are used to form alliances that allow for the sharing of loot, defence of each other on the battlefield and even allowing some men to gain 2 or 3 ships in a small personal fleet to increase his power inside the armada.   Battles are common, with the Wofgwu al Zhakhā signing on as mercenaries, raiding any city of village they find or even as body guards to nobles they find strong enough to earn the Dānāofaris respect. It is common for the people of Wofgwu al Zhakhā to be contracted by rival powers, but with the idea of spilling another Dānāofaris blood in battle being seen as a sin in their religion the 2 groups will normally take what ever payment they where promised and return to sea before they can be stopped.

History

Early

The early history of the Wofgwu al Zhakhā consists of running low on supplies, aging ships and a tired population. As they continued west along the coast they would see very little in the way of raiding targets, until it was they came to the shores of Esmaraine. Here the amount of large cities would vastly increase and overall a massive turn in fortunes for the Wofgwu al Zhakhā would follow. The pillaging of Lorinar would ultimately set the course for the future of these wayward souls as they would steal slaves, riches and maps from the locals and be able to take enough supplies to repair their ships and feed themselves they would use their new maps to plot a course north, where riches and glory would await them.

Modern

The modern history of the Wofgwu al Zhakhā sees a massive amount of raiding with their fleet returning from the far north east after trading among the cities of the Empire of Jadheng and across the Sea of Daul they have been sailing their way south for the last 4 years, with newly constructed and repaired ships they are set to arrive off the coast of Alasada to reunite with their kinsmen who remained behind to try their hand at mercenary work in the west.
