Beastmen of Idaen

The Beastmen of Idaen, commonly known as the Beastmen or in The Sisters as Parauju, are a semi-nomadic species that lives deep within the region known as the Vale of Idaen. Many Beastman have been known to grow up to 213cm (~7ft) and a body mass far bulkier and heavier than your average human. For this reason, they are capable of physically imposing themselves on smaller races and can pose a serious threat when charging.   In terms of colouration, the fur of the Beastman tends to be a mix of browns, blacks and greys; with eyes typically black or brown and even golden in the cases of some individuals. Both genders, male and female, sport rudimentary horns, with males and females both growing to approximately the same size.

Culture

Little is known of the inner workings of the Beastmen, for despite having encountered other species in the past, very few are ever permitted within their homes. The race seem to reside within small clans or tribal communities and migrate within the vale depending on food, security or unplanned interaction with outsiders. Miners from Latua rarely see the homes of the Beastmen, but once spotted by the Beastmen, rarely get the opportunity again, with the entire tribe disappearing overnight.   Despite this reclusive nature, some observations have been made about the lives of the Beastmen. Some of the Beastmen seemingly inlay gold on the tips of their horns, whether this is a cultural or a religious tradition is not known, but is potentially a symbol of status and power within their peoples. They have been seen foraging and gathering plants such as Wild Tymelberry, Sotosen and Nal-Nezom. Curiously, travellers also claim to have seen Beastmen placing bushels of Duren-Guem in their fur; which is firmly refuted by Latuans who insist the Beastmen are mindless savages incapable of higher thought and fit only for work and slaughter.   There is a language amongst the Beastmen however, consisting of grunts and roars that would be inconspicuous amongst the noises and sounds of the forests. Workers taken by the Latuans note how they seem to speak through these barks and in a way no different to their own tongue. For all their attempts however, it has been undecipherable by the Latuans. This does not mean the Beastmen fail to understand the Latuan tongue however, with them more than capable of carrying out commands when answered. This one sided relationship remains one of the great mysteries of the Beastmen.

Relationship With Others

Attacks and raids by the Beastmen are frequent and often deadly within the Vale of Idaen. Novar from the west and also sistermen from Latua often encounter this race around the highly valued mines of the Xemidu and Erdenemen mountains, posing a risk to travel and prospecting in the region. Despite this, much activity continues in the region, often with armed guard and caravans to protect them.   There is a long history of conflict between the Latuans and the Beastmen, which drives the reclusive nature of this folk ever on. Prized for their size and strength, many Beastmen are routinely captured, chained and forced to work in the highly valuable Agtirrio and Fado mines, far from their native Vale of Idaen.   It was not always this way however - Latuan tradition states that several hundred years ago, settlers, nobles and great warriors from across The Sisters of Alsada, Dorada and Padaoza made their way west across the Verrau sea and seized the lands of Latua by force. Seeking expansion and access to the rich and untainted hinterlands of the region, the fourth sister, Latua was created. Many Beastmen were slain and driven into the mountains however, where they remain to this day.
