Swearing and Oath

History

The act of swearing an oath to an ideal or being is an incredibly spiritual and momentuous action that shoould not be taken lightly. Typically this occurs once a warrior has reached a certain degree of power and wishes to officially devote the use of that power to said ideal or being and in doing so reach the status of Paladin.

Execution

This varies exponentially from person to person, and often due to its personal nature the execution of each individuals oath ceremony is not known by many. There are a few aspects that remain consistent however; the oath must be sworn before the being it is being made to in some capacity, this can either be in a place of worship or more literally in their presence. The person making the oath must communicate their intended oath to the being, which can be in the form of speaking the words or making silent prayer.

Known Oaths

Avris Ethelwood to Bahamut

On the 5th of February, 32PT, Avris Ethelwood D'Est Errall was called to Mount Celestia, summoned by the Platnium Dragon, Bahamut. It was here that he was actually brought immediately before the God, who until this point did not have the power necessary to form. Avris had just returned from the plane of Acheron where he fought along with The Crimson Sisters to protect his crew at great self-sacrifice; the battle on Acheron ended with him killing Henry Beckett, the love of his life who had turned to Bane in order to help exact his revenge on the Merfolk, who he blamed for the sinking of his vessel and the death of his crew. Before he was able to murder any of the crew of The Crimson Sister, Avris stuck him down with a divinely empowered strike.
This notable act, along with Avris's alignment to the ideals of Bahamut and service in His name, tipped the Cosmic Scales to the point where Bahamut could begin to fully reform. It was there at the top of Mount Celestia, before Bahamut Himself, that Avris made his Oath of Redemption.
Avris's Oath of Redemption was made by kneeling before Bahamut, where he spoke the words of the oath and swore to uphold them in His name. From that moment on, Avris was able to fully channel the power gifted by Bahamut, as well as champion his tenants.
The Oath of Redemption was as follows:
Peace Violence is a weapon of last resort. Diplomacy and understanding are the paths to long-lasting peace.
Innocence All people begin life in an innocent state, and it is their environment or the influence of dark forces that drives them to evil. By setting the proper example, and working to heal the wounds of a deeply flawed world, you can set anyone on a righteous path.
Patience Change takes time. Those who have walked the path of the wicked must be given reminders to keep them honest and true. Once you have planted the seed of righteousness in a creature, you must work day after day to allow it to survive and then flourish.
Wisdom Your heart and mind must stay clear, for eventually you will be forced to admit defeat. While every creature can be redeemed, some are so far along the path of evil that you have no choice but to end their lives for the greater good. Any such action must be carefully weighed and the consequences fully understood, but once you have made the decision, follow through with it knowing your path is just.

Isaac Fairbard to Bahamut

After the events inside the Death House in the town of Barovia, Isaac attempted to make his oath the Bahamut. For unknown reason, upon making the oath the lantern that Isaac carried cracked, a sign of rejection by the God.

Sir Percival Kelby to Tyr

An more public case, Percival Kelby made his Oath of Devotion in the Church of Tyr in an official ceremony given by the Order before a congregation made up of the church, the order and his personal friends and family.
The Oath of Devotion was as follows:
Honesty Don't lie or cheat. Let your word be your promise.
Courage Never fear to act, though caution is wise.
Compassion Aid others, protect the weak, and punish those who threaten them. Show mercy to your foes, but temper it with wisdom.
Honor Treat others with fairness, and let your honorable deeds be an example to them. Do as much good as possible while causing the least amount of harm.
Duty Be responsible for your actions and their consequences, protect those entrusted to your care, and obey those who have just authority over you.
